Awards show is also a fashion fest - Buffalo News

Lupita Nyong’o wowed in a sexy, caped, red silk strapless gown from Ralph Lauren and Lena Dunham showed up Sunday night in form-fitting canary yellow – with tattoos out – for the Golden Globes, one of Hollywood’s biggest fashion fests.

Kerry Washington complimented her baby bump in sleeveless white with a low neck and draped effect up top from Balenciaga.

“I also feel like I have the best date of the night, my little accessory here,” she told E! Entertainment.

Early arrivals included Zooey Deschanel in a gold, ballet-skirted Oscar de la Renta with a youthful, boxy cropped top and vintage Neil Lane earrings. Other stars and nominees went for older Hollywood shimmer in slinky gold, silver and champagne.

Cate Blanchett provided an early Katharine Hepburn red-carpet moment in Armani with high lace at the neck and a how-low-can-you-go back, along with Chopard earrings.

Amy Poehler picked three custom gowns from Stella McCartney, including a slinky black halter look, while her co-host for the awards season opener, Tina Fey, went for a fuller, strapless red and black from Carolina Herrera as her first look.

Amy Adams wore two shades of red in a backless high-waisted halter dress with a low front slit to the waist by Valentino.

Dunham, yanking at the top of her Zac Posen gown as she waited for her turn on the red carpet, joked about eating and the awards season as she practiced her diva poses. “I actually ate a thick patty of hamburger before I came, like a cave woman,” she joked to E!

More subdued was Elizabeth Moss in an embellished bordeaux and black, short-sleeve gown from J. Mendel, her choice from about five she considered.

Tom Ford was Hayden Panettiere’s choice – a black-and-white halter with a high side slit.

“I’d wear a plastic bag if it was designed by him,” she said on E!

Navigating a crowded red carpet sometimes requires a lifeline.

After posing for photographers, Moss of “Mad Men” joined hands with two other women to make it through a crowd of people.

Similarly, actress Zosia Mamet of “Girls” required a steadying hand to guide her to a TV interview.

For actor Bruce Dern, his guiding hand came from daughter and actress Laura Dern. She held onto her father not only while walking the red carpet but also during a joint interview.

Kelly Osbourne had to make a dash down the red carpet earlier than most – rushing past cameras as fast as her high heels could carry her.

Osbourne, who was providing fashion coverage on E!, had begun a celebrity stroll down the carpet as she headed toward the position where the photographers are stationed.

But as other stars started arriving, and it got closer to the start of the pre-show events, she had to hoof it, paying more attention to her footing than to the fans screaming her name.

Overcast skies parted to let the sun shine on the Golden Globe Awards red carpet moments before the stars started arriving for Sunday’s telecast.

Although there wasn’t a threat of rain for the awards extravaganza, that didn’t keep some of the red carpet from getting drenched when a lighting rig set off a fire sprinkler, soaking on section of the carpet a few hours before show time.

A video posted on the Los Angeles Fox affiliate (Channel 11) Instagram account showed the sprinkler dousing an area that crews later used wet/dry vacuums to clean up. The incident happened a couple hours before the first celebrities set foot on the carpet.
