Football meets fashion: Designers customize haute couture helmets - New York Daily News

Want your own fantasy football helmet? There's still plenty of time on the clock.

Bloomingdale's and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) joined forces to create a collection of haute couture helmets to celebrate Super Bowl XLVIII and benefit the NFL Foundation.

A superb squad of famous designers, including Diane von Furstenberg, Kenneth Cole and Rachel Zoe, created the one-of-a-kind helmets, which are part of a display as well as items for auction.

The helmets can be seen in the window of the Bloomingdale's store on 59th St. and online. People who stop by the display can virtually try on some of the helmets thanks to FaceCake's interactive technology.

The helmets feature everything from feathers to sequins. Loomstate's doubles as a giant panda head. Several of the creations, including those by Alexis Bittar and Eugenia Kim, are covered with flowers.

Another memorable design comes from Rogan Gregory’s namesake label Rogan, which thought outside the box and made its helmet, well, a box.

Bloomingdale's also has its own helmet, which features a model of the Empire State Building surrounded by four mini-Statues of Liberty sticking out of the top.

"Bloomingdale's New York Heritage combined with the fact that Super Bowl XLVIII is taking place in our backyard gives us an opportunity to merge fashion and sports in a modern way," the department store chain's executive vice president of marketing Frank Berman said in a press release.

Natara Holloway, the NFL's vice president of consumer products, called the collaboration "another way for fans of football and fashion to get closer to the game and be a part of the Super Bowl XLVIII festivities."

The big game will take place Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., but the auction will continue until Tuesday. All net proceeds will go to the NFL Foundation.

Bidding for the helmets started at $248. As of Wednesday afternoon, the edgy silver helmet by menswear designer John Varvatos had the highest current bid — $2,276.
