Anytime you visit Miami, it’s essential to turn on the glam. The first-ever Fashion Inspiration Award went to the right woman - Chicago Reader

The first-ever Fashion Inspiration Award went to the right woman

Posted

By

today at 04.30 PM

Street View is a fashion series in which Isa Giallorenzo spotlights some of the coolest styles seen in Chicago.

There couldn't be a more appropriate recipient of the Museum of Science and Industry's first-ever Fashion Inspiration Award than French blogger and illustrator Garance Doré. Credited as one of the first to use blogging as a tool to discuss style and a pioneer of the street-style movement, Doré received the award at last week's Fashion Forward event. Of course, Doré wasn't alone in the early days of fashion blogging—there were others out there, including her ex-boyfriend Scott Schumann, aka the Sartorialist

What makes her so worthy of the award is that she is, in fact, hugely inspiring: her kind demeanor, her simplicity, her courage, the ingenuity to keep doing what she loves, the ability to reinvent herself—by the way, Garance Doré isn't her real name—her sense of humor, her charming accent . . . and last but not least, her clothes. In an illustration by Chicago's own Josh Crow, Doré is shown on the night of the award ceremony sporting a sophisticated but fun ensemble, mixing a romantic lace top with modern checkered trousers. Classic French on top, creative American on the bottom. Speaking of creative, Fashion Forward also featured "cutting-edge wearable technology curated from around the world," including the Galaxy Dress, a CuteCircuit creation composed of 24,000 tiny full-color pixels. The brand also presented garments that display images and messages that can be controlled through a smartphone—so now you can basically wear your tweets. See more of the event—illustrated!—below, along with some of Doré's work.

And to finish, some of Doré's words of wisdom, shared during her talk at Soho House:

"Where there's passion there's always something important, especially in America, where people give you a chance."

"When you're creative, just give stuff away. People will come to you and throw money at you when they're ready."

"You have to give something if you want to get something."

"When you know your work is being seen it's such an incentive to progress, so I encourage everyone doing something artistic to put their work out there."

"People connect to the real you—it's not about sharing your intimacy, but something you believe in, something you're interested in."

"I'm not too worried about what people will think of me—sometimes!"

"We're all freaking out about the same stuff. That's what makes people connect."

"I just photograph people I want to be."

"Just before Fashion Week I used to run to shops, buy crazy things and think I was going to be the next street style star. I call it the 'Fashion Week monster.'"

Many thanks to Josh Crow, who illustrated this post—he also makes illustrations by commission. See more Chicago street style in the Chicago Looks blog.

Value Village and Eco Fashion Week fashion show - The Seattle Times

BETTINA HANSEN / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Marianne Hale, of Seattle, left, styles a fifties-themed outfit for model Makaela Bielaski, of Redmond, for the Value Village and Eco Fashion Week fashion show at AXIS Pioneer Square in Seattle, Thursday November 20, 2014. Eco Fashion Week is rooted in Vancouver and this is the first time they have done a fashion show in Seattle. Value Village partnered with Eco Fashion Week to provide the materials for two different runway shows - the 68-pound challenge and the thrift chic fashion collection. For the 68-pound challenge, two designers created runway shows using 68 pounds of discarded textiles, which represents the amount of textiles an average North American throws away each year. Sarah Edwards loves connecting communities in a big way.

She created I AM Kindness, an army of volunteers offering acts of kindness in the Twin Cities, from surprise makeovers at senior homes to bus driver gift bags.

She is also founder of I AM MPLS! an annual fashion, food, art and entertainment event that draws 1,000 attendees each year.

And this year, Edwards, 29, is adding an I AM ST. PAUL! event to the roster for the first time.

Before the fashion and entertainment events get underway next month, we chatted with Edwards about her love for fashion and efforts to connect the creative community.

Q: How did I AM MPLS! come about?

A: I've always loved fashion and the role it played in my life. It allowed me to play different characters. I wanted to create an event and fashion show that was about art and design and entrepreneurs. I really consider myself a connector -- what I really enjoy is bringing together people from different walks of life and industries and seeing what we can create together. The main reasons I do these events is I believe in supporting the local community and getting people to take risks.

Q: What makes I AM MPLS! and I AM ST. PAUL! distinct from other fashion and entertainment events in the Twin Cities?

A: The events are more about people than fashion. The fashion is obviously very important, but the people -- who they are and what they're about -- are more important than the latest trends.

The events also bring in different industries. I want to have someone from the culinary industry, someone from the art industry ... someone who is just totally doing their own thing that is cool and kind of bizarre.

Q: Why add an I AM ST. PAUL! event this year?

A: St. Paul and Minneapolis really complement each other, but I didn't have the bandwidth to do both. Then I found Carrissa (Carr) Glarner to produce the St. Paul event. She has all the right characteristics. She's collaborative and a hard worker. She lives in St. Paul and is connected to the community. She has taken I AM ST. PAUL! and made it her own. She's meeting all the people and coordinating the event. I'm consulting. It takes a small army to put on an event, that's for sure.

Q: How has the event evolved over the years?

A: The first one was at the Fine Line Music Cafe in downtown Minneapolis five years ago. That year about 500 people came. Last year, about 1,000 people attended.

We continue to grow in other ways. We have a new website and continue to join with community partners. When you have funding, it's a lot easier to put on a show. This year, sponsors for I AM ST. PAUL! include Mississippi Market and Rayette Lofts. We really could not have done this event without them.

It's about connecting businesses and sustaining an entrepreneurial city where people can shape their dreams and passions and have the whole community support them.

Q: At I AM MPLS! at Aria event center last year, you threw a surprise wedding in which you and fiance Jared Lukes got married. How do you pull off a surprise wedding?

A: It was pretty last-minute. We had been engaged for a long time, but we were both so busy we wondered when we'd have time to plan a wedding. Jared is an entrepreneur, too, so we always fill our plates with more than possible.

Our friends were going to be at the event so we thought, why not? Only a few people knew about our plans. My mom would have killed me if I hadn't told her. Local designer Emma Berg made my dress, and a few close friends helped with the planning.

People ask me if I would have done it differently. I don't think so. It was just very us.

Q: How do you describe your style?

A: I can't stand the word "trend." I just don't care about that stuff. I have a really eclectic style. If I see something that speaks to me, I get it.

Latin Grammys 2014 Red Carpet Boasts Glamour, Skin And Fashion Don'ts - Huffington Post

Rain may have put a damper on last year’s Latin Grammy’s red carpet,

but this year not even President Obama’s historic immigration announcement could stop the parade of stars preparing for Latin music’s biggest night.

Alessandra Ambrosio, Juanes, Flavor Flav and more were at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena on Thursday night. Golden gowns and black svelte dresses proved both classic and glamorous on the green carpet, but not everyone was on point with questionable headwear and designs that left little to the imagination.

Actress Laura Alemán was just one star who could’ve use a little more fabric for her black lace dress that was too sheer for comfort. But it’s safe to say that more fabric isn’t exactly best, for example, Jenni Lopez’s ensemble.

Co-host Jacqueline Bracamontes’ gown was a bright yellow that clashed with the green carpet. The actress did, however, redeem herself with several elegant dress changes throughout the night.

Newlyweds Shannon De Lima and Marc Anthony had no trouble showing their affection on the carpet. Throughout the night the Venezuelan model was seen singing along as her hubby took the stage for several performances.

The first-ever Fashion Inspiration Award went to the right woman - Chicago Reader

The first-ever Fashion Inspiration Award went to the right woman

Posted

today at 04.30 PM

The thrift chic collection, which Hale participated in, allows each designer $500 in fashions at Value Village to create a runway show of ten outfits.
