MILEY CYRUS PUT HER STYLE CARDS ON THE TABLE

So keen to impress that she's no longer a cookie-cut Disney star, Cyrus has spent the year on the skin-flashing offensive. Yes, she's 21 and yes, has a trim figure that suits anything, but what we don't know about her thighs/crotch/bellybutton isn't worth knowing.

CARA DELEVINGNE CAPTURED THE ZEITGEIST

She might have been pipped to Model of the Year by Edie Campbell but Cara was the one to capture the Zeitgeist (it's scientifically true, she was the most searched-for fashion name on Google). She spent the year not only strutting on catwalks, but acting in films, singing, Instagramming her latest tattoos and basically cementing herself as a bonafide celebrity who is not going anywhere anytime soon.

NICOLE KIDMAN GOT KNOCKED OFF HER STILETTOS

Ouch, here's Nicole Kidman suffering from the most brutal fashion week-rlated injury we've seen for a long time. The star was going to her hotel after the Calvin Klein catwalk show during New York Fashion Week in September, and a paparazzo on a bike got way too close for comfort, toppling her off her Nicholas Kirkwood heels. See more pictures of the indicent here.

MARC JACOBS BID FAREWELL TO LOUIS VUITTON

The rumour went into overdrive several days before the Louis Vuitton Paris Fashion Week show. Could Jacobs, who has transformed the luggage house during his 16-year tenure, really bid 'adieu' to Paris? Turns out he was, and funny that, because the retrospective-themed stage was already set, yet Jacobs insisted he didn't know that show would be his last until he made the decision that morning.

With no animosity, Jacobs will focus on his eponymous brand with the hope of securing an IPO in the future.

THERE WAS NO ESCAPING RITA ORA...

The chart topper has successfully conquered the music world, and she's spent the past year muscling in on fashion territory (and that of her 'wifey', Cara Delevingne). First was the modelling assignment for Italian sneaker brand Supergra, and then Madonna and her daughter Lourdes came knocking, requesting for Ora to model their Material Girl line. Next thing you know, she's the face of DKNY - bumping Cara off the brand's books in the process - and then a design deal with Rimmel and Adidas. That's How We Do (it), Rita-style.

ISABEL MARANT TOOK OVER H&M

Swedish chain H&M hadn't treated us to a designer collaboration for a whole year when Isabel Marant's purse-friendly pieces hit its stores. The Parisian designer didn't disappoint; revisiting her back-catalogue of hits the one-off collection - for women, men and children - half the collection looked like it has been plucked from the catwalk. Alas, only seriously devoted early-birds managed to nab it, and the union has been credited with boosting the chain's sales for November 2013.

KATE MOSS POSED FOR PLAYBOY

Two icons, one marking its 60th anniversary, the other almost 40 years of age; never mind that, Playboy and Kate Moss share 100 years of history - they just get better with age.

Moss is rumoured to have commissioned an artwork by Chuck Close based on her turn on the magazine's cover, which was captured by dynamic duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Crooner Sir Tom Jones interviewed Croydon's finest pin-up for the shoot, while Marc Jacobs threw a party at London's Playboy club in her honour. Doesn't get anymore fabulous than that, does it?

TAMARA MELLON REVEALED ALL

If you're a budding entrepreneur or just a shoe-lover, Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon book is a compelling read. From the mention of her drug-fuelled partying on page one, to the admission that former business partner Jimmy Choo never designed a single shoe, Mellon reveals that behind the glossy façade hers was a bleak world of private equity and creative tussles. Now at the helm of her new, eponymous brand, she lays out a few home truths in her autobiography.

HARRY STYLES WOOED THE FASHION PACK

He's garnered himself a coterie of stylish friends - Alexa Chung, Nick Grimshaw (heck, he was even on Poppy Delevingne's hen do) - and has a penchant for Saint Laurent wares. Little surprise then, that Harry Styles's army of One Direction fans voted him to the Style Icon of the year at the British Fashion Awards. We'd bet our Birkin that he'll score a major fashion campaign for 2014.

CARINE ROITFELD BECAME SUPERWOMAN

Our best-dressed woman of 2013 might be nearing the traditional age for retirement (she's 59 yet proving that this is really just a number) but she just gets hungrier for a challenge. This year saw the grandmother star alongside 30-something daughter Julia in a Givenchy campaign, and release Mademoiselle C, the documentary all about her fabulous life and her magazine, CR Fashion Book. If it all sounds too boastful - it's not. Roitfeld is indefatigable and our inspiration for it.

ALEXA CHUNG 'WROTE' A BOOK

The model/TV/presenter/Vogue contributing editor admitted that her book debut was fuelled by boredom and heartbreak. "I was heartbroken and I didn't know what to do, so I decided to throw myself into a project," said the 30-year-old of her recently released tome, It. Written via a string of e-mails composed to her editor, the result is a series of photo-collages, drawings and musings on denim shorts and lipstick - but absolutely not a style bible, nor an autobiography. Reviews have been mixed, but this is most likely just the beginning.

MISSONI CEO VITTORIO WENT MISSING

The Missoni clan rang in 2013 with the alarming news that the small aircraft carrying company CEO Vittorio had disappeared en route to the Venezuelan capital of Caracas from the Caribbean archipelago of Los Roques. As the son of the Italian knitwear brand's founders Ottavio and Rosita, Vittorio ran the brand with his two siblings, Angela and Luca. Tragically, his father passed way in May, just a month before the missing aircraft carrying Vittorio, his partner Maurizia Castiglioni, their two friends and two pilots, was found in June. Reports of bodies located out at sea surfaced in October but haven been unconfirmed by the Missonis.

HEIDI KLUM'S GERIATRIC HALLOWEEN OUTFIT

She might be of German origin, but model Heidi Klum is the queen of America's Halloween. This year she kept her disguise firmly under her mop of wiry grey hair, and emerged as Heidi circa 2063. Thanks to a team of prosthetics specialists behind the scenes, the 40-year-old was the talk of her annual party thanks to lashings of wrinkles and pigmented skin.

DOLCE & GABBANA WERE SENTENCED TO PRISON

Design duo Dolce & Gabbana were sentenced to jail for tax evasion in June, but they haven't swapped the high life for the barred life just yet. As is customary under Italian law, the former couple will remain at liberty pending the appeals process. The designers contest that they engaged in a "sophisticated tax fraud" (according to the prosecutor) around the sale the sale of their D&G and Dolce & Gabbana brands to a holding company in Luxembourg in 2004 which meant they could evade €400 million on a €1 billion business deal.

CHRISTY CAME BACK

First it was her sexy, carefree pose in a scarlet dress in a campaign for Jason Wu; then the floogates opened and Christy, one of the original supermodels, has been popping up on billboards with slicked-back for Prada, in her undies for Calvin Klein and having a jolly old time with Doutzen Kroes in H&M's Christmas ads. Looks like 44 is the new 24.

FRENCH CONGLOMERATES WENT ON A LFW SPENDING SPREE

Commentators are quick to note how creative London is a style capital, but the big guns really showed their faith by getting their wallets out. LVMH snapped up a minority and majority stake in J.W. Anderson and Nicholas Kirkwood respectively, while Christopher Kane has admitted that he's been sleeping better since being heavily invested in by Kering.

KIM KARDASHIAN WAS WELCOMED INTO THE FASHION WORLD

The most Googled celebrity on the planet upped her style game (not an easy feat when pregnant) and was welcomed on the cover of Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book (yes, sporting grilz). She's not going anywhere for 2014.

DAFT PUNK GOT VERY LUCKY

Secretive electro duo Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter can't think of anything worse than having their photos taken with their helmets off, but as long as their head gear is on, they're only too happy to oblige- and especially if it involves top models Karlie Kloss, Gisele Bundchen and Asakia de Brauw. The Saint Laurent-suited Frenchman have been popping up left, right and centre in the fashion world, including the covetable pages of US Vogue with Ms Kloss, and the aforementioned Saint Laurent's Music Project.

KANYE WEST MOANED AND MOANED

We might have to nick-name wannabe designer Kanye West Cocky Kanye. The rapper accused Fendi of copying his work (apparently West invented leather jogging pants); said Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane was a step behind him and called on fans to boycott Louis Vuitton after being snubbed by its vice president. We could go on, but we won't.

JOHN GALLIANO SPOKE OUT

More than two years since the anti-Semitic outburst in a Paris café which cost John Galliano his jobs at both Dior and his eponymous label, the designer finally broke his silence. "I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race" he told Vanity Fair in June. Blaming a destructive turn to alcohol, he explained: "I now realize I was so f**king angry and so discontent with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could." Cathartic projects, such as a three-week residency at Oscar de la Renta's studio have ensued, so we hope that's not the last we see of the 53-year-old.

MIRANDA AND ORLANDO'S MARRIAGE WILTED

Miranda Kerr and Orland's Bloom's love, erm, bloomed three years ago when they welcomed Flynn, their son. But fast-forward to October 2013 and theirs is the most amicable split in Celebville. "'We love each other, we're a family" said Kerr, with Bloom saying likewise. Next question is who will they move on to next?
