SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — Those grabbing a bite to eat during the last weekend of Christmas shopping inside Saginaw Township's Fashion Square Mall got an unexpected dose of holiday spirit.
Members of the Saginaw Choral Society and the Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra participated in a holiday-themed flash mob Saturday, Dec. 21, inside the mall's food court, 4787 Fashion Square Mall.
In a video posted on YouTube, choral society artistic director and conductor Glen Thomas Rideout hops up on a chair in the middle of the packed food court to lead singers in a rousing rendition of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.
As the music begins, singers wearing red scarves and holding sheet music appear in different parts of the room.
Spectators look on in wonder as the flash mob comes together, with Rod Bieber leading members of the Saginaw Youth Symphony in accompanying the singers. Several people are seen holding up cell phones to record the unexpected musical performance.
"It wasn't five seconds before every phone camera in the room was on," Rideout said.
The idea was sparked during an ongoing email conversation between those involved with the choral society and youth orchestra, looking for what Rideout refers to as "relevant, engaging and uncompromisingly excellent" ideas to incorporate music into the community.
"Lately we've been taking a bunch of ideas about how we can do to serve the community," he said.
The choral society worked with management inside the Fashion Square Mall to get permission for the performance, Rideout said.
At the beginning of the video, Rideout's is the singular voice heard singing the word "Hallelujah" to the youth orchestra's accompaniment.
The idea, he said, was for it to appear that the music randomly inspired him to since. That's when the other singers stood to join him.
"I remember there was a lot of applause," Rideout said. "I think the reaction was more telling during the performance."
Rideout said he was touched to see the smiles on the faces of choral society members and others in the crowd putting their arms around each other.
"We were sharing a special moment and giving a special gift," he said.
