Sequins, leather drop the ball on Coast New Year's Eve fashion trends - SunHerald.com

Women add edgy flair to party dresses

There will be no shortage of sequins and leather at New Year's Eve parties in South Mississippi.

Local boutique owners say that the biggest trend in New Year's fashion this year is a staple -- dresses that sparkle.

"Pewter and gold sequin dresses are big this year," said April Bullock, owner of Ivy Boutique in D'Iberville.

Bullock said the classic "little black dress" also is a staple that many will wear for New Year's Eve outings.

"Classic black makes the ladies look thin," she said.

Many women are adding an edgy flair to flirty, feminine dresses for New Year's by adding ankle boots and textured leggings.

"Women here are starting to make more bold fashion choices," Bullock said.

One of the most popular dresses for holiday parties at Ivy Boutique is a gold sequin dress with swirl designs and three-quarter length sleeves. The dress retails for $98.

Laura Skelton, owner of Luxe Eighty-Three on Pass Road in Biloxi, said that no matter where the party, "anything that sparkles" is appropriate for New Year's Eve attire.

Skelton and her sister, Kayte, opened their boutique two-and-a-half months ago.

Skelton said that aside from a classic sequin dress, clothing with leather accents is also a popular choice for New Year's Eve.

"You can't go wrong with either," she said.

Leather is wearable and comfortable, and Skelton said it adds an edgy touch to a sophisticated outfit.

Skelton's top outfit pick for New Year's Eve from Luxe Eighty-Three is a rose gold sequin wrap dress for $88.95.

Delana Harris, an instructor of marketing and management technology at Pearl River Community College, said sequins are a staple in New Year's Eve outfits that will never fall out of favor with women.

"Sequins at New Year's are like a little red dress at Christmas," she said. "It will always be in style."

Harris, who has a bachelor's degree in fashion merchandising from the University of Southern Mississippi, said fashion trends are evolving due to social media.

"Trends are hard to measure in fashion because they aren't tangible," she said. "However, social media is playing a huge role in measuring trends and how they expand."

Harris said retail owners use their social media page to promote new items, and how many times those items are liked, shared and purchased can factor into what's trending in a region.

Harris said that in South Mississippi, the addition of leather, lace and studs to winter outfits is a result of the growing trend of 1990s grunge that is back in action.

"Mixing a classic oxford button down with a punk sweater is common right now," Harris said.

Harris said not to strike out bold color choices for New Year's Eve.

"Cobalt blues and bright greens are huge right now," she said. "Lace was also one of the biggest trends of 2013."

Harris said New Year's fashion will lead into bold colors, floral prints and loud patterns for spring.

"Don't count out your grandmother's floral skirt just yet," she said.
