The New York Times Fashion Year In Review - Refinery29

Looking back on 2013, it's a blur of nail artbooties, mixed prints, edgy haircuts, and bustier tops. Oh, and the '90s were back, big time. Indeed, sifting through the year's biggest trends is a daunting task. So, we turned to The New York Times best-of list for a little guidance. The 15-story landing page is filled with beautiful imagery to match the throw-back headlines, and the compilation is something of an industry cheat sheet to the year in review. Many of the articles serve as tent poles for what was right, wrong, and kind of meh in 2013.

For us, the standout was definitely Suzy Menkes' "The Circus Of Fashion," which highlighted the madness of street style and fashion week. It became somewhat of an industry talking piece — and it was pretty accurate. Same goes for Menkes' "Sign Of The Times: The New Speed Of Fashion." It's a thoughtful look at the demands and production schedules of the industry. Or, rather, how the rabid desires of fashion-hungry online shoppers doesn't always match the pace creatives can maintain.

Also on the list are the requisite articles about Miley Cyrus' shockingly not shocking black dress, an ode to black eyeliner, and a review of the Givenchy fall collection. The handful of headlines proves this year was a pivotal one, not only for the actual clothes we're obsessing over, but more so for the industry that makes them.

As for that '90s thing? We hear it's still so 2014. Catch up on all the stories and sound off about your favorite 2013 moments in fashion in the comments below. (The New York Times)
