Store's goal: keep fashion in Fairbanks - Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

— In a city where clothing options are mostly limited to big-box retailers, outdoor outfitters and grocery stores, it can be hard to stand out.

That's why Adrienne McGee, a 30-year-old Fairbanks native, opened Rock Valley Boutique, a clothing store in downtown Fairbanks aimed at bringing unique, fashionable women's clothes to the Interior.

"I don't buy clothes somewhere I can buy milk," she said, sitting in a comfy leather chair in the minimalist store.

Dressed in dark jeans and a black-and-white graphic T-shirt, she said she had stopped shopping in the Interior altogether, giving up on the idea that she'd find anything special.

"I always just shopped when I leave," she said. "I'll shop in Anchorage, I'll shop in Chicago and I'll shop in New York. It got to the point that I was never shopping here."

When McGee set out to design her store and pick the labels that would fill the store's racks, she set to researching. She read blogs, dug through magazines and talks to brand representatives to find brands outside of the usual upscale trappings.

Every piece of clothing from boot socks and hand bags to dresses and T-shirts to the shoes that she'll be adding soon are researched and picked by her, and new selections will be coming in about every two weeks.

"My store will never be full to bursting with stuff," she said. "That's all there will be, I'll only ever order six pieces of something and I don't like the idea of people having to wear the same thing as someone else. … It's just the kind of stuff I feel is unique and can't get anywhere else."
