Zach Parise showed up to the Wild dressing room Thursday ready for his first game in a month, yet all anyone wanted to talk about was that sweater.
Parise, the Wild's $98 million left winger, was one of a handful of athletes chosen to model the Ralph Lauren-designed gear the U.S. team will wear during the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games Feb. 7 in Sochi, Russia.
"I got a lot of requests in the locker room from guys who wanted to wear that sweater," Parise joked.
Parise modeled more than one sweater, actually -- as well as a pea coat, sweat pants, boots and hat -- but there was no question which sweater his teammates were talking about. Several 8x10 photos of Parise modeling the hip-length, navy cardigan were hanging in the Wild's dressing room at Xcel Energy Center.
Parise has been on injured reserve because of a foot injury suffered when he blocked a shot Nov. 25 in St. Louis. The Wild are 7-8-0 in his absence, yet the impact of his return was momentarily squelched by the impact of that sweater, so full of logos it resembles a NASCAR fire suit designed by Martha Stewart.
Parise is one of eight Minnesotans on the Olympic men's hockey team, and a candidate to be its captain after helping the U.S. win silver at the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
His hockey credentials are unimpeachable, but when Wild coach Mike Yeo was asked about Parise's modeling abilities, he laughed.
"I've got no comment on that," he said.
