There is a lot to be said about the fashion at last night’s Golden Globes. Overall, we were happy with what some of our favorite celebrities selected as their attire for the show, but there were some that had us scratching our heads. And while you can see the whole list of winners here, Marama and Kristina are here to evaluate the Golden Globes 2014 fashion hits and misses.
Red was a popular color for the night, as was minimal accessorizing, which simply means all the focus was on the women and the gowns they donned. The Golden Globes are often seen as the start of the awards season, and also as a good forecaster for the Oscars, airing on March 2. If the fashion trends follow suit, we should expect to see some more extraordinarily dressed women on that red carpet.
Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive
Kristina: Miss. I know I may get some flack for this, but I am just not feeling the lace. Maybe if it was strapless, something about it just doesn’t seem right to me.
Marama: Hit. Maybe it’s the Aussie pride in me, or maybe it’s just that Cate Blanchett looks absolutely amazing in everything. The lace is decadent but not overwhelming, and the fitted cut makes it a great, yet subtle choice.
Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung
K: Miss. Initially, my reaction was ‘yuck,’ it looked like cotton candy exploded on her, but the more I looked at it, the more apathetic I became about it. It’s nothing spectacular but it’s certainly not the worst dress on the red carpet.
M: Miss. The idea is fun, but the colour blocking doesn’t work with the black separating the pastels – it looks like two different dresses stitched together. The cut it fantastic on her, but the colour ruins it all.
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture
K: Hit. Some people thought it a fancy coffee filter, the Internet has already provided their take on it (white comforter and two black belts), but I like it? I think it’s simple. I hope she seriously steps it up for the Oscars, though. Something tells me she’s going to have a chance to redeem her fall.
M: Hit. She looks fresh and classic, although it isn’t the most interesting choice of the night. Her styling and accessories perfectly accent the simple colours and silhouette. Lawrence looks wonderful in everything, but that doesn’t make this any less wonderful.
Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen
K: Hit. The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this: “from mermaid dresses to Ursula.” She breaks out of her staple close-fitting dress and opts for a gown with a bit more fabric. But I still love it – statement necklace and all.
M: Hit. It isn’t super interesting, but it is super gorgeous. The necklace and the simple styling offset the beautiful dress, which makes the most of her envy-inspiring figure.
Kerry Washington in Balenciaga
K: Hit. Baby bump! Amazingly structured dress! But, baby bump! Even if Scandal is four episodes short this season, I’m ok with that because this dress and Kerry’s glow makes up for it.
M: Hit. What a beautifully cut dress. She is glowing, and the white just makes her shine even brighter. The styling and accessories match perfectly, I can’t say a single bad thing about this.
