Blanchett wins Globe and fashion races - MSN NZ News

Cate Blanchett won the Golden Globe, was named one of the best dressed and is on track to win another Oscar.

It was a great night for the Australian actress, who admitted knocking back a few vodkas while waiting to hear if she was going to win the dramatic actress Globe for her performance as a fallen New York socialite in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Blanchett was not the only A-Lister enjoying the night with a few drinks.

The Golden Globes have a history of weird and wonderful speeches and Sunday's ceremony lived up to expectations.

"A few vodkas under my belt and here we are," Blanchett, who now has three Golden Globes, told the star-studded crowd inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

While Blanchett was the short-priced favourite to win, many of the other major categories didn't follow the script with Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club upsetting the dramatic actor race with a win ahead of Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and Robert Redford (All is Lost).

The Dallas Buyers Club also had another big win, with Jared Leto, who plays a transexual prostitute with AIDS, claiming the supporting actor Globe.

Leonardo DiCaprio, for The Wolf of Wall Street, upset another Oscar frontrunner, American Hustle's Christian Bale, when he won the Globe's best actor in a comedy/musical category.

The best drama was won by 12 Years a Slave, confirming the film's favouritism for the best picture Oscar while Alfonso Cuaron, as expected, took the directing Globe for Gravity.

American Hustle won the best musical/comedy Globe, giving it momentum and a chance to cause an upset over 12 Years a Slave at the Academy Awards.

In the TV categories, Breaking Bad cleaned up with the best drama series and Bryan Cranston pocketed the lead dramatic actor prize.

The new comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine upset Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory and Girls for the best comedy series and its star Andy Samberg was the surprise winner of the best comedy actor award.

The Globes, decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are often a train wreck as it is one of the few major Hollywood ceremonies where the booze flows.

Sean "Diddy" Combs summed it up best when he appeared on stage and told the audience: "Everybody just keep drinking. It'll be over soon".

British actress Jacqueline Bisset, 69, set the tone early when she won supporting actress for a TV mini-series or movie for Dancing on the Edge and then delivered an awkward, rambling, expletive-laden acceptance speech.

The seven second delay button received a good work out during the TV telecast, including when Diane Keaton dropped a few unpleasant words while delivering a speech for Woody Allen who decided not to turn up to receive his Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award.

Australian Wolf of Wall Street co-star Margot Robbie had her own drama when she appeared on stage to announce an award and the teleprompter malfunctioned.

"I have never done this before so I don't want to improvise," the panicked former Neighbours starlet said.

New Zealand claimed a Globe victory with US actress Elisabeth Moss winning best actress in a mini-series for her performance in Jane Campion's Kiwi shot Top of the Lake.

Red carpet fashions are often more competitive at the Globes than the award battles inside and Blanchett, in a black lace Armani Prive gown, had fashionistas salivating.

"Blanchett always takes the art of the red carpet dress to another level. And today's Golden Globes look is no exception," Los Angeles Times fashion critic Booth Moore wrote.

Blanchett will almost certainly need another gown for the March 2 Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce its Oscar nominees on Thursday and Blanchett is the short-priced favourite to win the second Oscar of her career after collecting her first in 2005 for The Aviator.
