1 lane open Friars Road near Fashion Valley Mall after water main break - 10News

SAN DIEGO - San Diego police on Tuesday issued a Sig Alert for the area near Fashion Valley Mall due to a water main break on Friars Road.

The break, which occurred on a 15-inch concrete water main, was reported at about 10:40 a.m.

One lane of the roadway is open in both directions.

The Avalon Fashion Valley condominium complex on the north side of Friars Road is without water. Residents told 10News water service is expected to be restored by midnight. Water wagons were sent to the condo complex for residents' use.

10News spoke with some who had other plans, especially since it is New Year's Eve after all.

"Taking some drinks," said resident Katy Ford. "We can't use our dishwasher or the toilet, but we can take some drinks."

But they will still need a bathroom.

"We're going to use the public bathroom, then come back to our place," said Ford.

Fashion Valley Mall, P.F. Chang's restaurant and other stores in the area were not affected by the water main break, just the condominiums.

"I walked out to check the mail and there was a slip of paper on the door and I thought, 'Well, this is good … not going to be able to use our water, that's fantastic,'" said Robert Davis.

Repair crews have been on site since 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday and have to mark out other utilities' lines before they dig down and replace the pipe. It is unclear how old the pipe is.

"It's kind of horrible," said resident Dominic Pascal. "We can't cook because we have no water."

So Pascal and his dog Simba ordered a pizza instead.

"We called the city and they said midnight, so we had to order in," he said. "Happy New Year."

Two of the three eastbound lanes of Friars Road have been closed while crews make repairs. It is unclear when they will be reopened.
