What makes a fashion it girl?
Welcome to round one of the 2013 Red Carpet Rumble.
We’re counting down some of our favorite—and arguably the best—red carpet contenders of the year, dividing our stars into four categories with the first being: fashion it girls.
What’s a fashion it girl?
They’re the stars designers want to dress because they set the tone for most red carpets. Maybe not the Oscars—or the Grammys—or even the Emmys—but any other award show or premiere, they set the bar for what makes a good look. They’re regulars on the best-dressed list and it almost feels unfair to put them in any other sartorial shark tank than one with their own.
Come back next week when we peg our eight fashion it girls against 24 fellow red carpet regulars in our competition to see who was the best-dressed star of 2013.
Are we missing any of your favorites? Weigh in on your favorite red carpet look of the year. We want to know!

Kerry Washington
How can you have an “it girls” gallery and not crown Kerry Washington the queen of them all? The “Scandal” starlet is always one of our must-see red carpet walkers at every award show. She occasionally fumbles, but she almost always takes the right risks and sets the bar for fashion among the trendier set. Kerry — you are flawless. Don’t ever change.

Allison Williams
In true Marnie fashion, the 25-year-old HBO star wasted no time outshining her “Girls” co-stars in the world of style. Williams was a front row fixture at fashion week, signed a contract with Simple Skincare, and snagged her share of magazine covers in 2013. On the red carpet, Williams was equally aggressive, bringing her best looks foward for a cohesive, elegant wardrobe that made her one of our favorites this year.

Emma Watson
Hermione Granger — where have you been? Watson continued to break out of her child actor mold in 2013, taking on the unexpected role as Nicki in Sophia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring.” The 23-year-old has always had a penchant for fashion during her “Potter” days but new roles opened opportunities to come into her own on the red carpet. Gone are the days of cookie cutter princess couture, making room for contemporary labels, tasteful cut-outs, and Chanel. Yes, please.

Freida Pinto
When it comes to fashion, Freida can do no wrong in our eyes. She’s one of those stylish girls that just brings her A-game wherever she goes, this year taking her from the sunny shores of Cannes to every extra exclusive fashion party on the block—and girlfriend doesn’t even have a film in theaters right now. Luckily, Pinto is nothing but consistently chic and has a plethora of flicks hitting theaters in 2014 — including the anticipated Afshin Ghaffarian biopic, “Desert Dancer” — so we look forward to her making this list again next year.

Rose Byrne
Probably best known or her role as uppity but beautiful Helen Harris in “Bridesmaids,” the 34-year-old Aussie actress continued to make her rounds this year with “The Internship” and “Insidious: Chapter 2” debuting in theaters. Bryne brings a classic elegance to the red carpet — chic, simplistic, effortless looks that just kill it. She’s easily one of our favorite of the year.

Kiernan Shipka
The 14-year-old starlet’s bold — but still age-appropriate — red carpet decisions and favoritism toward rising designers has her many steps ahead of her “Mad Men” co-stars. She is consistently charming, poised, and dressed to kill.

Lupita Nyong'o
The “12 Years a Slave” actress is easily one of the must buzzed about newcomers, known for her impeccable style and flawless beauty. She’s been one of our favorites to watch this season and as the nominations for her film roll in, we look forward to seeing what more is in store for her style — and her screen presence — in 2014.

Amanda Seyfried
The 28-year-old American actress kept busy following her tour de force red carpet circuit for the 2012 release of “Les Miserables.” This year, Seyfried’s two biggest flicks couldn’t be more different: family-friendly animated adventure, “Epic,” and R-rated Linda Lovelace biopic, “Lovelace.” Needless to say, Seyfried stepped up her red carpet game to play to both audiences and her style benefited for it.
