ALL THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER FROM THE WEEK IN STYLE AND CULTURE
Dec. 14 – 20
1
Number of stand-alone beauty stores Burberry opened on Monday. Burberry Beauty Box, situated in London’s Covent Garden, includes such nuts-o things as a Digital Runway Nail Bar, where customers can “try shades virtually by a using a radio-frequency identification-enabled platform to match their skin tone to a color.” Maybe they’ll import one of these to America? Could help to offset our contracting scientific research funding. …
2
Number of United States flagships Acne Studios can now boast. The Swedish fashion house celebrated the opening of its new downtown Los Angeles retail location with a dinner at the Ace Hotel. Guests were greeted by pajama-wearing men who served up mushroom-shaped lemon meringues. Acne’s popular pistol boots: they probably look great with bikinis, actually.
3
Number of bedrooms Rihanna has converted into closets in her new $39,000-a-month SoHo penthouse. Why not?
5
Number of years between Pippa Middleton, 30, and banker boyfriend Nico Jackson, 35. Rumors are whirling that the two are engaged after 15 months dating. Let’s hope she keeps her promise to wear tennis whites to her wedding.
12
Days we have to wait until John Koblin starts as the Times’ new Styles reporter. Koblin replaces Eric Wilson (who left for InStyle in October), and given his past experience as a media reporter and sportswriter, he’ll undoubtedly bring some unexpected angles.
15
Age of Julie Borawska, the Polish model who graced the pages of the November issue of Vogue Mexico. This is the third time the magazine has violated its own Health Initiative, which was put in place in June 2012 and allegedly bans the use of models under the age of 16. D’oh!
30%
Percentage of the cotton-blend paper used for United States currency that’s historically come from denim scraps. Now, thanks to our increasingly tight, tiny and stretchy jeans, Crane — the company that’s been supplying the paper for over a century — is unable to use this previously plentiful source of material because the addition of dpandex spoils the pulp. Now they have to buy cotton to make money. Sign of the times, indeed.
90%
Percentage of angora wool that comes from China. PVH Corp, the parent company of Calvin Klein, Izod and Tommy Hilfiger, is discontinuing its use of the fur following the gruesome video PETA released last month showing the torturous conditions of Chinese angora rabbit farms. The video is grotesque — screaming rabbits, bloody skin —and probably worth avoiding. Just take their word for it.
94%
Percentage of those polled by Lab42 who say Pinterest has changed the way they prepare for the holidays (42% admit to having created holiday-themed scrapbooks). Does “prepare for the holidays” mean buying party dresses for yourself?
$400 million
Dollars generated to date by Beyonce’s first two fragrances. Now there’s a new one called Rise. It was allegedly inspired by Maya Angelou and the main note is “golden symphony orchid.” Paging Lorne Michaels. …
$2.3 billion
Dollars paid by William Morris Endeavor and Silver Lake Partners’ for IMG Worldwide Holdings Inc., owner of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. If anyone can control the semiannual circus, it’s Ari Emanuel.
