Ugly holiday sweaters are fun, but this time of year I’m all about that piece in your closet that can be repurposed over and over. When it comes to formal celebrations, my go-to garment is the little black dress.
The best thing about the little black dress is that you can make it what you want — all it takes is the right accessories. Add a little glam by adding jewelry. My latest obsession is layering.
Mix and match for a unique look. I like to pull one chunky necklace and layer it with a simple thin chain, or pair two similar chunky pieces. Or if your dress’ neckline doesn’t call for necklace, stack up on bracelets.
Have fun mixing chains, colors and bling. While our mothers may not have worn gold with silver, there are a number of ways to pair contrasting metals that add a little depth to your outfit. Check out Elizabeth & Prince and Anthropologie for examples that work.
But don’t overdo it; if you’re going to stack necklaces, lay off the bracelets and vice-versa. There’s nothing worse than looking like you’re selling bootleg jewelry — not even an ugly holiday sweater.
If you’re not into bulking up the jewelry, add a pair of sparkly earrings, shoes or handbag along with a jeweled belt or flashy headband. All are simple accessories that can make your outfit pop.
And last but not least, my favorite holiday trick is jazzing up my nails. Pick out a glitter-inflected polish, or enhance your favorite shade with a shimmery topcoat. One of my favorite lines is Essie’s Luxefects, which you can find at your local Target.
