THOUGH SHE IS now based mostly in New York, Swedish fashion designer Carin Rodebjer has no intention of waving goodbye to the whiff of Scandinavia that infuses her pieces. With soothing neutrals, sharp bracken-inspired prints and strong silhouettes, Ms. Rodebjer's vision of summer is pure Stockholm—trendy, with a deceptively simple pared-back look.
"I do take the best part of Sweden," she says. "I like that the Swedish aesthetic means pieces are comfortable to wear. But I also take energy from New York—it's the best things from both."
Ms. Rodebjer, 44, first moved to New York in 1999 to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. Within months, her designs began to be picked up by local boutiques and the brand was born.
Three years ago, the designer moved back to the city, where she now holds her fashion shows. The change has meant that she often looks at her native country through the hazy lens of nostalgia. She speaks wistfully of a childhood on the Baltic island of Gotland—memories that continue to inspire her. The island's simple architecture reflected in the clean, crisp shapes that dominate her collection, its floral cliff tops reappearing in the ferns that crop up in her prints.
But there's more to Ms. Rodebjer's vision than nostalgia expressed in cotton and silk. For spring, her inspiration was architecture—and one of Modernism's leading female proponents, Eileen Grey. "I wanted to find a woman who gives it an extra spark," she says. "I wanted to find a woman who had built a house and I found Eileen Grey, who had a holistic approach to her work. She had a human Modernist approach and I wanted to intuitively work that into the style we have. It's sharp and minimalistic. Print and nature together, with a clean, sharp cut."
Highlights from the current collection include flowing summer dresses perfect for a garden party (from €185, rodebjer.com ), a ruched pencil skirt crafted from gathered silk-chiffon (€295) and a cream kimono dress-cum-coat (€355) whose fluid length and tailoring make it a practical—and pretty—option for warm weather. "I love the kimono set," says Ms. Rodebjer. "It's super-sharp and you can wear it as an outer garment or as a dress. I wore it for a trip to Miami and it felt so safe and secure. So versatile."
Versatility is something the designer, in true Scandinavian style, can't get enough of. "There's another style which is like a long shirt dress," she says. "You can style it in 300 different looks!" Perfect for a city girl who needs a wardrobe as diverse as her portfolio.
