The 19-year-old senior spent more than five months imagining, sketching and creating a one-of-a-kind dress for the day.
The orange and ivory dress is a strapless, floor-length creation.
When she first started envisioning the dress for the big day, she wasn’t certain exactly what she wanted it to be.
But as time went on, it came together piece by piece, and she couldn’t have been happier with the outcome.
“It was very beautiful, the way it flowed,” she said. “The finished results made me very happy.”
And she felt like the belle of the ball.
“I surprised everyone at prom, and everyone wanted to see it,” she said. “I was the diamond girl of the night.”
In fact, after finding out the dress was her own creation, a few friends and a couple of teachers have asked her to make something special for them in the future.
Why would a busy high school senior use all her spare time to design her own gown? Because it is her passion. Continued...
Her love for the business began when she was 12 years old when her uncle bought her a sketch pad and colored pencils and taught her different shading techniques.
“He told me you can design anything,” she said.
And from there she has focused on her love of the arts. She has taken every type of art class made available to her, including graphic design, welding and ceramics.
“I took every opportunity to take classes that could tie into what I want to do for fashion,” she said.
At school, she is considered a fashionista. She works hard to create new looks every day. Often she’ll rework a look from a piece of clothing she discovered at a vintage or thrift shop.
“I believe everything you wear is a piece of art,” she said.
Dowridge is inspired by everything around her, not just clothes.
“I’m inspired by prints and patterns,” she said. “There’s no limitation in fashion. Anything you can imagine, if you can create, you can build it.”
She takes time to draw in her sketch pad every day. Continued...
So far, she’s just created a few other items, but she recently sketched out an outfit she absolutely loves and considers her favorite.
“I hope to see it on the runway someday,” Dowridge said. “It’s a colorful pant suit with a very unique design to it. I would consider it high-end fashion.”
She’s interested in designing men’s and women’s fashions.
One of her biggest challenges is critiquing herself and nitpicking each idea. She’ll change even the smallest detail until she thinks an item is just right.
She knows the fashion industry is going to be tough and ultra-competitive, but said she’s ready for it. Her eyes are on the prize.
In just a couple of months, she’ll be headed to Chicago to attend fashion school. From there, she hopes she’ll snag an internship at a prestigious company in New York. Ultimately, she hopes to head her own business.
“I want to inspire the world with my creations,” she said.
