Bomb squad investigates suspicious vehicle at Orlando Fashion Square mall.
A suspicious man who parked a car near Macy's at Fashion Square and then left the area prompted Orlando police to evacuate the department store Tuesday.
Officers were first called to the 1300 block of Asbury Avenue in the Audubon Park neighborhood about 1:30 p.m. because of a suspicious man sitting in a vehicle.
Sgt. Jim Young said the man, in his early 50s, made concerning statements, including telling police he was the best chemical engineer there was.
The man would not answer questions or dispel concerns.
Young said the man had a set of rental car keys and officers learned he parked another vehicle — a rental car — filled with luggage near the Macy's.
"His suspicious actions and behavior, as well as his statements and non response, created additional concerns for public safety," Young stated.
The man would not explain why the rental car was parked at the mall.
Orlando firefighters and police responded to the mall to check the vehicle and luggage.
Police evacuated the Macy's and the adjacent parking lot as a precaution. The rest of the mall remained open as the bomb squad checked the luggage with the help of a robot.
Several shoppers who were told to leave the Macy's stayed close after the area was cordoned off to wait for updates.
After a more than four hours of investigation, police determined that there was nothing dangerous inside the car or hidden in the luggage. The area was reopened about 5:50 p.m.
The suspicious man, whose name was not released, was not arrested but police have concerns about the man's mental health.
"The suspicious person who was contacted early and (whose) actions created the concerns to public safety has been transported to a mental health facility for evaluation," Young said in an email statement.
