The movie year is drawing to a close far too quickly — but there’s still time for a quick look back at three of 2013’s best moments in movie fashion ...
‘The Great Gatsby’
Whether you loved Baz Luhrmann’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald or not, the costumes for Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) were undeniably breathtaking. In this ethereal ballerina frock (designed by Catherine Martin), worn in a breezy early scene, she seemed — quite rightly — like she might float away.
‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’
Oh, those butterflies. This knockout gown, worn by the insanely stylish Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), is vintage Alexander McQueen — made from thousands of feathers, painted to resemble monarch butterflies. Costume designer Trish Summerville borrowed the archival piece and created a headpiece to match.
‘Blue Jasmine’
Cate Blanchett’s costumes in Woody Allen’s modern take on “A Streetcar Named Desire” weren’t fanciful or over-the-top; but, as designed by Suzy Benzinger, as meaningful as any this year. Blanchett’s Jasmine, desperately clinging to a life that’s gone, wore her Chanel blazers and pale silks like armor, clutching her Birkin bag like it might save her from drowning.
