Joan Rivers has fired back at comments by Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, who criticized TV shows like Rivers' "Fashion Police" for making light of women who don't fit a narrow conception of beauty.
"It's funny," the comedian tweeted a few days after Lawrence's statements in a webcast interview on Nov. 6, "how Jennifer Lawrence loved E!'s 'Fashion Police' during awards season when we were complimenting her every single week. But now that she has a movie to promote, suddenly we're picking on all those poor, helpless actors.
"Wait!" Rivers, 80, continued. "It just dawned on me why Jennifer Lawrence fell on her way up to the stage to get her Oscar" in February, when she won best actress, for "Silver Linings Playbook." "She tripped over her own arrogance."
Lawrence, 23, had responded to an audience question during an interview hosted by Yahoo! chief executive Marissa Mayer at the company's Sunnyvale, Calif., headquarters, regarding the actress' feelings about "those who judge others based on appearances."
"Well, screw those people," responded the often-outspoken star of the upcoming "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." "I mean, it's something that everybody experiences. I experienced it in school before I was famous... But you just have to look past it," she said.
She then added, "And there are shows like the 'Fashion Police' and things like that, are just showing generations of young people to judge people based on things that, you know... they put values on all the things that are wrong and that it's OK to just point at people and call them ugly and call them fat, and they call it fun."
Lawrence's spokeswoman did not respond to a Newsday request for comment.
