Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West might be flexing his muscle a bit too much after joining forces with mega sneaker retailer Adidas this week by asking his supporters to boycott popular fashion line Louis Vuitton.
According to reports, Mr. West wants to prove a point and have his loyal following give LV the cold shoulder through next year.
Kanye West just ordered all of New York City to stop buying Louis Vuitton ... STAT! Kanye was on 92.3 NOW radio station moments ago when he handed down the edict, saying, "Everybody in New York City right now, don't buy any Louis Vuitton until after January." Kanye says he's trying to make a point to the head of Louis Vuitton, Yves Carcelle, who refused to meet with the rapper the last time he was in Paris. Kanye's point ... Yeezy's got power and influence ... and he's using it to teach Frenchie a lesson. FYI, Kanye's been on an anti-fashion crusade recently, claiming the world's top designers have essentially blackballed him from the industry because he's a black rapper. The crosses Yeezus has to bear. (TMZ)
Yesterday, Kanye credited Adidas for allowing him to collect royalties to provide for his family.
"I gotta get my money up to another level because it ain't on Jay Z level," Kanye said in an interview. "It ain't on Diddy level yet. ... The old me, without a daughter, might have taken the Nike deal because I just love Nike so much, blah blah blah. But the new me, with a daughter, takes the Adidas deal because I have royalties and I have to provide for my family. Whatever's official, non-official, what y'all are gonna see is I am going to be the Tupac of product. It ain't no Tupac of rap except for Tupac. ... My designs are based on what I grew up on in hip-hop. My references be like, 'Girl shaped like Kim.' Not these skinny, trying to look like a boy-type models that they try to put on the runway in fashion. My reference is Nas and Mobb Deep. ... I'm gonna be the first hip-hop designer and because of that, I'm going to be bigger than Wal-Mart." ("The Angie Martinez Show")
In Ye's weekend rant, he dug into Nike's politics and admitted being looked down upon by its executives.
Just a few days removed from calling out Nike CEO Mark Parker, Kanye West is back it again. This time, during an open dialogue at the Madison Square Garden stop of the Yeezus tour this weekend, Kanye showed signs of a deeper rift between him and the Swoosh, as well as hinted at a new deal to be announced as early as Monday. "They try to act like people ain't line up for the Yeezys," he said, going on to drop names like designer Hedi Slimane, LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, and Kering Corporation head Francois Pinault. "Mark Parker tried to son me. Yes. Son me because I am the sun and I will shine bright. And when I don't have as much money as a billionaire and when I don't have the factories that, that dude has over there, what I do have is my voice. Ain't no corporation that can take me away from my voice and I'm going to scream at the top of my motherfucking mountain as loud as I want. Anything I want. Whenever I want. Is that crazy? So I'm going to make the announcement on Monday with the corporation that finally let me get an opportunity to create." (Complex)
Back in December 2008, buzz behind Kanye wanting to intern at fashion empires like Louis Vuitton bubbled online.
It's no secret that Kanye West is one of high fashion's biggest fans, attending shows in Paris and New York and shouting out everything from Baleciaga to Public School on his blog. When rumors started circulating last month that the rapper was looking for a fashion internship, we couldn't help but think of Sean Avery's stint at Vogue. But, it turns out that West has serious intentions of interning before his own clothing line Past Tell launches next year. The New York Times spoke with avant-garde designer Raf Simons, who tells the paper that "I was blown away from the planet when he told me." But that doesn't mean that West has the job just yet. Simons explains, "I know he's very serious about this -- I don't take it as a joke -- but how can I imagine him being my intern? It's a very extreme situation." We applaud Kanye's interest in conquering another creative field from the bottom up and can't wait to find out where the star end up interning. (People)
