Ghesquière replaces Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton - FRANCE 24

Luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton has named French designer Nicolas Ghesquière as the new artistic director of its women’s collections, replacing the outgoing Marc Jacobs after he stepped down from the role last month.

Louis Vuitton, the flagship brand of the France’s LVMH group, announced the news on its official Twitter account on Monday, accompanied by a black-and-white photo of Ghesquière.

“Louis Vuitton is thrilled to welcome Nicolas Ghesquière as artistic director of the women’s collections,” it said.

Jacobs, 50, announced he was parting ways with Louis Vuitton at the start of October in order to focus on his own label after 16 years as its creative director. Jacobs is credited with helping to grow the label into one of the world’s biggest luxury clothing brands generating more than 7 billion euros in annual sales.

Front-runner

The American’s replacement has been the subject of intense interest, both among LVMH’s investors and in the fashion world, with Ghesquière having been frequently touted as the front runner for the position.

The 42-year-old had been without a fashion house after leaving Balenciaga in November 2012 following a 15-year-run as its creative director in which he successfully refocused attention on the brand and drew in celebrities such as Beyonce and Rihanna.

Ghesquière is currently being sued by Balenciaga’s parent company Kering, however, for breach of confidentiality after he spoke negatively about the fashion house in a magazine interview.
