Close your eyes and think back to the 1990s. Remember Michael Jordan and the six-time-champion Bulls, the music from Nirvana, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Salt-n-Pepa, *NSYNC, and the Spice Girls? The big TV shows were “90210” (the original), “Saved By The Bell,” “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”and “Friends.”
But what do I remember from that decade, other than my wedding? The fashion!
Oh, those fashions.
They ranged from grunge, with slashed, baggy jeans, plaid flannel shirts and Doc Martens to the complete opposite preppiness of Tommy Hilfiger. Cool colors were hot neons — blues, oranges and pinks. Mini-skirts, overalls, oversized sweaters and sweatshirts, cropped tops, high waisted jeans, baseball caps worn backwards and hi-top gym shoes were also on the scene.
Well, for all of you who loved those looks, they are back. With no apologies, H&M is just one store carrying ’90s looks, albeit a tad updated. Check out the black mini-skirt. Sleeker and more stylish than its ’90s counterparts, the mini is still super tight and super short.
Denim, though a perennial, had its signature ’90s incarnations. There was the stonewash look, along with relaxed fit and ripped jeans. However, the two denim must-haves were the jean jacket and overalls. Find those today at E Street Denim, Highland Park and Winnetka, but in more slimming designs.
And plaid. Plaid never entirely disappears, but this season the fashion world was mad for it. No surprise that the ’90s black and red plaid checks are back on trend as shirts, pants or tops. Plaid is forever.
So when I reflect on the ’90s, I vividly recall those TV’s “Friends” gang in their faded baggy jeans and white tees. I hear Salt-n-Pepa’s hip hop, seeing them in neon colors and overalls with one strap off-shoulder. And in cropped tops (way before the Miley Cyrus version), it was the gang from “Saved By The Bell,” showing off their abs.
So if you want to re-live that decade, or at least the fashions, the clothes to do so await your pleasure.
