THE LITERARY FASHION CHEF: Charlotte Neuville, a.k.a. “The Fashion Chef,” has signed a book deal with Harper Collins. She said she will relate her story of how a fashion designer was able to put her fears aside and pursue a different career in French pastry art, still incorporating many of the same talents she used as a fashion designer.
“I’m a fashion designer, and now feel so good [about the decision]. I’m more involved with the Council of Fashion Designers of America than ever before, but I just happen to be using a different medium,” said Neuville, whose yet untitled book will come out in spring 2015.
A graduate of Williams College and the Parsons School of Design, Neuville worked for Perry Ellis and Adrienne Vittadini before started her own fashion brand, Charlotte Neuville Inc. She later became executive vice president of New York & Co. Inc. and Gap Inc. After 30 years in design, she left the fashion industry to attend The French Culinary Institute, graduating in 2011. She served an internship with Master Cake designer Ron Ben-Israel, and then launched The Fashion Chef, where she designs and bakes one-of-a-kind cakes for weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, milestone birthdays and corporate events.
“I absolutely love what I do,” said Neuville. “All the best things I still get to do. I’m sketching, painting and sculpting, and I have to drape....the cakes are totally related to what’s going on trend-wise.” For the fourth holiday season, she’s designing cakes for Barneys New York. Her cakes will be featured in Barneys’ holiday mailer.
