Spring Fashion Gets Comfortable - Wall Street Journal

Even in this media-saturated age of ours, it is a rare thing when an item featured in a couture show—traditionally the preserve of the über-monied—sends seismic ripples into the more mundane world of everyday fashion. But when Karl Lagerfeld paired sneakers with every one of his designs, including model Cara Delevingne's final "bride" look, it served to underline what modern fashion is all about: comfort, fit and form.

We should all thank Mr. Lagerfeld for making it suddenly OK to look like Melanie Griffith in "Working Girl"—minus the white socks. As the old quote associated with Mlle. Chanel goes: "Fashion has two purposes: comfort and love." With that in mind, here are a few key pieces for spring that make function and fashion perfect bedfellows.

BIKER JACKET // The leather biker jacket has been around for some time. But the point about it this season is that it's pared down and morphed into a kind of blazer-cum-biker, now wearable at any age. Jaeger, £399

LOOSE JEANS // Suddenly, tight jeans seem, well, tight. Buy them loose without being baggy and go for white, which might prove to be the proverbial triumph of hope over experience when it comes to spring, but let's at least show we're willing. Next, £22

SNEAKERS // For a modern look, go all white. Nike NKE +1.02% Nike Inc. COLLARLESS COAT // Finally, designers are acknowledging that we don't all live in the Med. These can be worn with everything. Wrap a scarf around the neck when it's chilly, or roll the sleeves and wear with a tee and jeans on warm weekends. Valentino, £1,915 at Selfridges

SIMPLE SKIRT // To swiftly update your overall look, try a simple skirt in a longer length. Do not entertain anything that doesn't at least graze your knee. American Apparel, £36

STRUCTURED SHIRT // Tops are more sculpted and structural. COS, £79

FLARED SKIRT // This shape won't suit everyone, but it's a welcome change. Wear it with a simple white tee (best from J.Crew) and your new sneakers. Wrap a cardi around your neck (yes, you can). Sporty and chic. Marni, £700 at Browns

FLORAL DRESS // You're going to want a longer dress this summer, preferably one with flowers. If you can, invest in the best: Erdem's classic, simple, energetic prints will outlast even this long-running trend. £670 at Net-a-Porter

JUMPSUIT // I know it seems unlikely, but a jumpsuit can cover all manner of ills. It's perfect for travel, and with a heel—we didn't say you had to be in trainers all the time—it will work for an evening drinks party. Isabel Marant, £655 at Matches

CHUNKY HEEL // Infinitely more wearable and stylish than the towering stiletto, this new stubbier, more stable heel should be worn with a bare leg. Yes, even at Scottish weddings. Chloe, £360 at Selfridges
