Halfway through the highly anticipated Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 fashion show last week, 18-year-old Kendall Jenner walked out wearing a V-neck shirt so sheer that her nipples were showing.
What’s a real woman to do?
Indeed, sheer clothing had a major moment on the runways this year — but translating those shock-worthy moments into real-world outfits requires a few styling lessons.
“Too much of a good thing isn’t a good thing,” says Karen Giberson, president of the Accessories Council. “[Sheer] can be anywhere from pretty, fresh and stylish to trashy.”
Retailers like Zara and TopShop have managed to make good use of sheer fabrics, often by adding subtle black sheer panels to the sleeve of a bouclé sweater or using a sheer black mesh fabric on one of their slouchy sweaters.
But there’s still one golden rule for the see-through look.
“Save it for evening or weekends,” advises Redbook fashion director Audrey Slater. “Unless your weekend plans include your mother-in-law.”
SHEER TOPS
When it comes to a completely sheer top like the Marc Jacobs one that Jenner wore, Giberson suggests pairing it with a non-sheer layer underneath.
“I love sheer tops,” says Giberson, “but I would buy a pretty camisole or a fitted tank to go underneath. They can be found in nude if you want to keep a pure illusion of sheer.”
At TopShop, a loose-fitting black mesh top ($72) looks great with a simple white tank top underneath.
Otherwise, take notes from designer Alexander Wang, who cheekily created a white top for spring that was sheer everywhere except the crucial chest area. That section was covered by a panel reading, “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content.”
“A top that has sheer panels where you can still wear your bra provides the illusion of sexiness without giving away the entire farm,” adds Slater.
SHEER DRESSES
Designer Michelle Smith of Milly was one of a few others who showed a see-through dress on her Spring 2014 runway — a black mesh number that looked sporty, but wouldn’t work on a first date (unless you want your revealing outfit to send a particular message).
The same can be said of a floral dress by Michael Kors — the lightweight fabric isn’t as obviously transparent as the kind used by Smith, but if you look closely, you can see the model’s white underwear underneath.
“Get more of a body-conscious dress underneath,” says Jaclyn Jones, a senior editor at WGSN, a trend-forecasting company. “Work a tighter dress under a sheer overlay, the way you would at the beach.”
SHEER SKIRTS
To wear a sheer skirt or dress, like the gorgeous white number Phillip Lim sent down the runway last week, find the right pair of leggings.
“A pair of opaque leggings under a skirt would be very pretty,” says Giberson.
Designer Mara Hoffman showed some beautiful ankle-length skirts in navy for her spring collection. She layered the sheer material over a pair of short shorts or a mini-skirt.
“Layer sheer fabrics with simple underpinnings or try with a sheer tunic and slim jeans,” advises Hoffman. “Since sheers are more of a statement piece, I would keep everything else simple.”
FINAL NOTES
Designers send out completely unrealistic clothes at fashion shows — that’s why they’re “shows.”
Consider Donna Karan, one of the greatest designers of all time, and a woman who has long celebrated the female body. Yet during Fashion Week, she showed off a gorgeous burnt-orange spring dress that was see-through from top to bottom.
You can’t wear it. But the good news is that Karan and her peers don’t actually expect you to.
“It’s part of the theater of fashion shows and most of us veterans don’t take those over-the-top looks too literally,” says Slater. “There are always dramatic moments during Fashion Week that will be reinterpreted in wearable ways later on. By the time they hit retail they’ll be transformed into actual clothes!”
