Johnny Weir on fur, figure skating fashion and how much he packed for Sochi ... - New York Daily News

From his stance on fur — he loves it, NBC doesn’t — to his penchant for sequined blazers, there’s no shortage of commentary about Johnny Weir’s wild wardrobe as a correspondent for the Olympic Games in Sochi.

He and on-air pal Tara Lipinski, who won gold in figure skating at the 1998 Games, reportedly packed eight massive suitcases stuffed with shoes, jewelry, designer bags and more for the almost month-long trip.

“Three of mine are the size of Ford Focuses. And three of Tara’s are the size of Audi S4s,” the two-time Olympic figure skater from Pennsylvania told Today.com.

All eyes have been on Weir and Lipinski since the pair landed in Sochi to dish commentary on the Winter Games.

Here, some fun facts about the duo’s daring ensembles:

NBC asked the fur-loving Weir to leave the minks at home:

“They said, ‘Go for it, do whatever you want, just on our air, no fur,’” Weir told Access Hollywood of his Sochi wardrobe. “And that’s something that I can understand.

“I said, ‘I don’t think it’s very appropriate. Fur is a very distinct decision that a person makes, if they support it or don’t, and I don’t want to be in the position to throw you under the bus if people get upset that I’m on your air and you’re allowing me to do this.”

Weir and Lipinski coordinate outfits

“For whatever reason, people are just gravitating toward what we wear and that we’re trying to match and be cohesive on television,” Weir told Today.com. “I think it’s TV 101 that you should look like your partners.”

Among their favorite matching looks? Last week, when Weir wore a hot pink, vintage Chanel jacket to go with Lipinski’s pale pink blazer.

Together, Weir and Lipinski packed 10 POUNDS of jewelry

And that’s not all. They also lugged 22 pairs of shoes, 25 blazers, six pairs of leather pants, nine designer bags and four of Weir’s fur coats, according to Today.com.

Even Weir’s hair holds meaning

The skater sported a “traditional Ukrainian braid” on Wednesday, after riots in Kiev killed at least 75 people.

“I was planning, before I came, on doing braids because it’s the style here,” Weir told USAToday.com. “I wanted to do it today because everything is going so rough over there.”

He wants you to know he doesn’t wear lipstick

“Many people comment on my makeup, commonly on my “lipstick,”’ Weir tweeted. “I use @BurtsBees original Lip Balm and nothin’ else.”

That rosy red you see? It’s just his lips’ natural shade.

They’re not afraid to diss other skaters’ looks

“They brought the circus to Sochi,” Weir joked about Australian duo Danielle O’Brien and Gregory Merriman’s lime green and fuchsia costumes on Monday.

He also didn’t approve of German ice dancer Alexander Gazsi’s cozy look.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — don’t wear a sweater vest.”
