There was A buzz in the air at Calvin Klein’s show at Spring Studios on Thursday afternoon as practically everyone was in their proper seat, save for two empty spots on the front row. Word was it was two celebrities; murmurings of a certain rapper and his model girlfriend; rumblings of two well-known teeny starlets.
But just moments before the show opened, Naomi Watts and Oscar nominee Lupita Nyong’o swanned in, emerging from backstage and clicking down the runway with a hive of handlers buzzing around them. Showgoers’ iPhones sprouted up and photographers bolted towards the pair, Nyong’o beaming in a rose cashmere and alpaca knit dress from pre-fall, Watts luminous in an ice-blue double-faced cashmere shift from the same collection.
“This was the first thing I tried on,” Watts said backstage after the show. “I saw it on the rack when I got to my fitting and I went right over to it. Didn’t bother trying anything else on. I mean, I loved it so why keep going?” she shrugged. “It’s so simple but that’s what I love about Francisco’s [Costa] clothes; they’re wearable, they’re chic, they’re effortless and for someone like me, I have a small frame so I can’t do big designs — too much fabric, too many busy patterns — Francisco creates these beautiful things that are simple but still have an edge and these design elements to it.”
Of the fall collection, she was coveting the outerwear the most. “Those coats were just fabulous weren’t they?” she said. “I’m putting my order in tomorrow.” The actress may have to fight off Nyong’o, who also said the coats were her standouts. “Oh, and the shoes, too,” she said. “I can’t wait until you can wear a shoe like that on the red carpet. Maybe I’ll try it.”
Speaking of red carpets, was Costa her designer of choice for her Oscar dress? “Mum’s the word,” she said, pantomiming locking her lips.
