Michael Kors' Fall 2014 collection reflected a new maturity.

It’s time to get serious.

Day seven of New York’s fashion week took on a tone that said “it’s time to get down to the business of fashion.”

Newly minted billionaire Michael Kors kicked off the day, showing a certain maturity with his collection, starting with vintage models Carolyn Murphy, Karen Elson, Frankie Rayder, Jacquetta Wheeler and Liisa Winkler on his catwalk.

The clothes reflected this new maturity. The new Michael Kors woman wears not much more than somber tones of gray, chocolate and camel — but pattern and posh texture, she does. Favorites included a tie-dye mink “bathrobe” coat, a skirt made of python to match a python patterned blouse, and a fitted charcoal dress embroidered with feathers.

In his initial season for Hugo Boss, Jason Wu sent out a suit-tastic collection to a house packed with celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Diane Kruger and Gerard Butler. However, it was a new kind of suit. Fitted tops were paired with flowing skirts, and outfits were made of cropped jackets over longer vests or vice versa. The waist was accentuated with precision tailoring and belts galore.

Going bold, KaufmanFranco’s Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco accented the human shape. Long and lean, this collection contained looks that were incredibly fitted thanks to the use of fabrics that stretch but don’t cling, and supportive mesh that almost disappears. Hence, cutout and backless dresses conformed to the models’ bodies. And there is nothing shinier than the metallic columns and gowns that closed this show — they were art.

Reed Krakoff knows what he likes this season and it’s a low-slung, wrap skirt. Sounds simple, but he souped them up by using exotic skins like python, hair calf or silver leather-centered collage. Coupled with tops like a double cashmere sweatshirt, it makes for a long, lean, very American look.

Marchesa’s Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman seemed to sweep through the Scottish Highlands with their deconstructed kilts and Chantilly lace numbers. Awash in saffron, this collection was heavy on lace and draped, floaty bits. Best looks were their laceup trousers paired with a bustle top and a simple gown embroidered with feathers to create an intricate pattern.

Anna Sui walked a fine line between the 1940s and the 1970s with slinky screen-siren gowns worn with fur boas mixed in with embroidered, fringed tunics and kaftans.

Nanette Lepore’s textural collection included knit pieces paired with wool coats festooned with fur on lapels and even sprouting from the shoulders. There was a handmade feel to some of the clothes — a nice touch for this designer who is a vocal supporter of keeping fashion production in New York City.
