Column is called: STYLE SAVVY
I’m excited to have the opportunity to write for the The Banner as its fashion columnist and I look forward to sharing my fashion ideas, secrets and shopping tips with all of you in the months to come.
To give you some insight on my life and how I became a fashion stylist, my first thoughts of fashion go back to the early age of 5. I was obsessed with organizing my dresser drawers and constantly making sure I put the perfect outfit together. I never lost that passion for fashion and as I got older the quest to be in this field intensified.
In 1984 as a high school freshman, I modeled for Jacobson’s department store in Michigan. During my 7 years with them I also assisted with dressing fellow models for fashion shows. After high school I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City where I earned a bachelor of science in fashion merchandising.
While attending college I was also an intern at Victor Costa’s showroom, a high end dress designer.
After working at Bloomingdales for Donna Karan I was hired at Iceberg’s showroom, an Italian company located on 5th Avenue that carried high-end men and women fashions. I assisted buyers from all major department stores in choosing clothing for different seasons. It was here that I met Sylvester Stallone. After witnessing how passionate I was about helping him to find the best look he began to work only with me.
Another passion of mine is interior home decoration. Being the workaholic I am I took a job with Mckenzie, a one-of-a-kind establishment for home furnishings. While working there I met Mary Tyler Moore who was so impressed with my abilities she continued to book me for all of her future shopping excursions. What an honor to have been able to help her!
In 1995 I moved to California and started my wardrobe styling business. It wasn’t long before I started working with more celebrities. Sandra Bullock was one and so much fun to work with. I was responsible for her wardrobe changes during the filming of Miss Congeniality 2. Another awesome experience! That same year I met my husband, John who I married 9 months later.
In 2006 John and I moved to Southwest Florida and started a family. We have a 7 year old boy, Johnny, and 6 year old girl, Makena along with 2 shih tuz dogs. All of them keep me on my toes. Makena has shown signs of having the fashion sense since she was very young. When she was only 2 years old we were about to go for a boat ride when she noticed that her life jacket didn’t match her bathing suit and refused to go. It’s so much fun watching Makena blossom into a Fashion Diva, it’s like reliving my past.
My love for this industry and the desire to learn all aspects of it led me to receive my color certification. By having this added training I am able to further assist my clients by having the ability to match their complexion with colors that are suitable for them; bringing out their best features. Nothing makes me happier than when I am able to assist a client to help make them feel and look great every day.
My belief is that you need to take your time when choosing your outfits and be sure to wear something that makes you feel good about yourself.
For years I had dreamt of writing a book about my experiences in the fashion industry and the many great stories I had about my clients. I finally found the time to commit to my dream and wrote my first book “Be Delicious Now: The Ultimate Fashion Secrets.”
It took me about 9 months to write and was self-published late December 2012. If you visit my website www.barbarakingstyling.com you can purchase an autographed copy or you can simply visit amazon.com. I’m currently in the beginning stages of my second book which will be geared towards teenage fashion.
After 30 years of fashion experience and watching the positive way people feel about themselves after a wardrobe makeover, it’s my mission to try to reach as many people as I can. Styling yourself is not about trying to impress the people around you, it changes the way you feel about yourself. If you feel good about yourself, you naturally exude self-confidence and that will impact you in your everyday life. After a few hours with me I will have you feeling wonderful from the inside out.
