The 39-year-old TV presenter, who moved into fashion a decade ago, tells Day & Night he felt like an outsider. “I never had a desire to work at Vogue or hang out with the fashion elitists,” he says. “I just liked the job of being creative.
“It was a personal journey for me because I felt worried that people would think I was anti-fashion and I’m not but I have strong opinions and I don’t buy into hype.”
Gok, who has previously revealed he was bullied as a teenager over his weight, says: “Even when I was styling a brand or working on editorial it wouldn’t just be about the ‘It-bag’.
“I’ve never done the hyper stuff before and I think that’s what got me far in my career.”
And Gok, who has just launched a range of underwear for Simply Be, adds that he still thinks people don’t value his credentials. “I was worried when I first went on TV because a lot of people don’t think I had a job before I worked on How To Look Good Naked.
“I don’t think people know that I do my research or draw or that I could hold my own around a table of people in the fashion industry.”
