Ypsilanti Community High School students organize fashion show to benefit ... - The Ann Arbor News - MLive.com

Ypsilanti students are preparing to work the runway in a fashion show they designed and coordinated to help fund the first-ever senior prom for Ypsilanti Community Schools.

The fashion show, which will feature students showing off trends and live student performances, is 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the auditorium in Ypsilanti Community High School at 2095 Packard Road in Ypsilanti.

Students have styled ensembles using clothes from their own closets and from donations from area businesses and organizations.

About 15 student models will walk the runway Thursday to beats provided by a DJ, showcasing sportswear, casual, dressy and formal looks. The evening will be an Ypsilanti community effort, as students from Eastern Michigan University will be doing hair and makeup for the models.

A total of 20 senior students at the high school have been involved in coordinating the event. It's especially important to the students and staff involved as the district works to create a new community in YCS.

The district is the product of two former rival schools—Ypsilanti and Willow Run—that were financially and academically troubled.

“We would like the community more involved and to support our activities,” said Christian Cannon, senior class president at YCHS, who is walking in the show Thursday. “As a new school starting fresh, we’d like to have community members participating in positive ways.”

The purchase of a $5 ticket at the door will enter you in to a raffle for a $50 gift card. All of the proceeds will go toward the senior class’ fund for prom.

“We hope to have a good turnout so that we can begin planning one of the biggest social events of the year for our students," said Lakesha Barton, teacher at YCHS and senior class adviser.

YCHS senior Alexus Sharper and her mother, Latanya Taylor, both of Belleville, have been heavily involved in coordinating the event.

Starting this school year, Sharper said she was worried that everyone wouldn’t get along and that they wouldn’t have enough money to have their prom in a good location. She was also worried that the class wouldn’t have enough money to go on a senior class trip—and so she suggested the idea of a fashion show to raise money.

“A lot of kids are excited,” Taylor said. “They don’t know what to expect.”

Taylor said she’s coordinated fashion shows and events in Detroit before and supported her daughter’s idea to help the senior class raise funds.

“It’s not just a fashion show and a fundraiser. It teaches them something about confidence,” Taylor said. “With the merger, I believe coming together (as a community) is important—it takes a village to make it work.”
