Sense of Fashion: Fall preview with James Gunn - Savannah Morning News

Metropolitan areas are filled with apparel boutiques whose variety fades after visiting the first five. Either these stores are stocking their styles to outfit only the same types of women, or the trends of denser crowds lack diversity. What we notice in Savannah after visiting store after local store for fall fashion styles is that each has its very own flair, fashion sense and options for all of us.

Enter James Gunn. After visiting so many fine stores in past weeks, we headed out of the city center and off to the fair isles of Sandfly. It’s on 8413 Ferguson Ave., ladies, in case you haven’t been to that corner in a while. This fashion niche doesn’t disappoint, and here is what stylist Lauren of James Gunn put together for us.

Look 1

Starting strong we fell in love with basic black. This take on the basic black is all about texture. Meet this sexy black leather skirt, with black and white overlay in crochet, by BB Dakota. Our stylist recommends going all out with this trend by topping the skirt with a black laser cut top by Generation Love. Full short sleeves, with laser textured perforation at the back, keeps it breathable and ready to party. Add a strong accent piece like this Found Jewelry vintage pendant on a suede leather cord. Rock all night long!

Look 2

This dainty dress is just as perfect for an evening at the Telfair as it will be for your favorite chocolate bar. Reminiscent of a flapper-style without the fringe, this is a winter white look fabulous on fair or sun-kissed skin with simple black beading. Add your latest winter coat in this romantic fall touch with velvet details over a fitted upper bodice with a bit of flounce. Let them swoon for you as they fight to get the door on your way out.

Looks 3 & 4

Keeping it simple from day to night, we found two dresses that highlight fall attitudes. The first is by Hoss, a new line to James Gunn this season. This dress illustrates the designer’s flair for the dramatic. Mixing beaded accents with hot colors and softening them up with silk creates quite a sensation. The dress is knit with silk sleeves and beaded at the front. Pair it with colored tights and flats for day time and add those cowboy boots for the bar. If you don’t have the latest from Globe, these Diba boots in cool nude will do the trick! The second dress is by 4 Collective. This is a more serious office look, because of the attached tweed skirt. Once again we see a bright highlight in the watermelon silk paired with fall classic grey tweed tones. This is walk out of the house to the office simple, but just as fashionable for that networking cocktail at the First City Club. Remember, this fall we are brave and bold with colors, but sensible about our time.

Looks 5 & 6

Cuddly casual fall favorites are on the way. We wanted to end with these two looks because once you find them you will make them your fall-back plan for days ahead. First we fell for this academic plaid silk dress by Equipment. Smart and preppy with this BB Dakota Sunday Sweater in a large cream cable. Layer this with your favorite jewelry, like this Found Jewelry beaded necklace featuring a rosary chain, ending in an arrowhead. This mixes our tribal accents with the sensible catholic school girl look keeping it edgy.

Finally we discovered your love for jeans will be a true romance this season with J Brand Photo Ready skinny jeans. This style has extra punch to grip that hip and hug that curve. They hold everything in place while you feel the comfortable J Brand stretch. We love this Lilla P pumpkin spice heathered v-neck sweater as much for the soft cotton as for the shade. Liven it up with a necklace like this beaded hit, with ghana bone and metal trade beads, ending in an arrowhead. Snug those toes in these Joie beaded flats and head out for dinner or hang on the couch. We know you won’t be able to resist!

What have we learned from our fall highlights and mashups? We know Savannah knows a trend when we see one, but we love to layer our trends and classic styles just as much as we do our sweaters. We know that for every local fashion haunt, we found a different spin on this season’s latest hits. Take it from us, remember your fall-back shops, but try the one around the corner, too, this fall. You may surprise yourself!
