It's Throwback Thursday, which means you're probably flipping through Polaroids of yourself in corduroy overalls and Keds. But here at MTV News, we're busting open our vault for vintage interviews with our favorite artists -- from way back when they were just blips on the music radar. This week, the year is 2008: Katy Perry had just kissed a girl, Taylor Swift was all-country and a brunette Miley Cyrus didn't even know what twerking meant.
It was a full five years ago that the three ladies — now royalty in the pop-music kingdom — were going head to head for Best New Artist at the Video Music Awards. (For the record, that fan-voted Moonman didn't go to any of them, but rather to Tokio Hotel.) Swift, who was co-hosting the VMA pre-show, admitted it might seem "a little awkward" to chat up her competitors about their red-carpet outfits, but promised to save the fighting until "after the cameras go off."
It was a time far before Katy Perry's "more grown up" Prism days, when she was still mucking through thrift stores for her wardrobes — "I don't really have a whole lot [of money]," she told Swift. But she still managed to put together a pretty award-worthy ensemble of tight shorts and a star-studded halter top — a very One of the Boys creation if you ask us.
Wearing a simple but elegant black dress, Miley looks nearly unrecognizable compared to the wild child who made a tongue-ridden entrance to this year's awards show.
