Breast-cancer survivors participate in Redlands fashion show - Redlands Daily Facts

REDLANDS >> Diane Parsons promised to let her inner diva loose at the fifth annual Celebration of Survival Fashion Show at the Terracina Surgical Arts Building.

The 58-year-old Redlands woman, who is twice a survivor of breast cancer, worked the runway at the Friday night event, showing off fashions from Devi’s with her husband, David, son Andre, 11, and daughter Deija, 10, cheering her on.

“I am thrilled. This is my first time doing anything like this. They call me ‘Mrs. Diva,’ and I don’t know why. But I’m so comfortable doing this,” Parsons said with a smile.

Parsons was one of nine models who were part of the fashion show to honor their journey from breast-cancer diagnosis to undergoing breast reconstruction surgery.

Friday’s event served as a way for the women — all locals — to celebrate their recovery and add some confidence as they continue their journey, said organizers.

Parsons said she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999 and again in 2006, and had a double mastectomy last December.

“I have never been down,” she said. “I have always been an optimistic, strong black woman. I refused to let this disease beat me.”

Friday night’s fashion show was emceed by Dr. Anil Punjabi , a Terracina Surgical Arts breast cancer surgeon who cheered on models from the sidelines, after a brief introduction before each models took to the catwalk.

Food, entertainment and a DJ spinning the latest hits were part of the festivities, organizers said.

But the biggest draw? The models themselves, Punjabi noted.

“This is an event to celebrate the culmination of a long journey many of these women have gone through when fighting their breast cancer,” he said. “This is their celebration of survival. This is for their spouses, their families, to be out and be a part of a feel-good event.”

In addition to Terracina Surgical Arts, the Women’s Health Imaging Center at Redlands Community Hospital sponsored the show.
