'Project Runway' winner accused of ditching Fashion Week show files countersuit - New York Daily News

A “Project Runway” winner who was accused last month of walking out on her own show during Fashion Week has come back to court with both guns blazing at the sponsors of her show.

Designer Irina Shabayeva, in her counter suit, filed Wednesday in Manhattan Supreme Court, describes how the sponsors forced her to produce 80 outfits — 30 more than usual — and then failed to provide enough models to wear them.

In addition, she says, the sponsors, New York Fashion Shows, messed up by adding an extra preview show to the agenda and then failing to tell the models that they had to work both that and the main event, the suit alleges.

When they left after the preview, less than an hour before the main show was to start, there was a mad scramble to find replacement models, the suit alleges.

When the sponsors could produce only seven - out of the 27 they promised - Shabayeva, who was nicknamed “Mean-a Irina” while on the show, said she packed up her collection rather than proceed with a "mockery" of a show before the fashion industry media and big wigs.

Shabayeva's lawyer, Kevin Malek, said his client filed the counter suit because New York Fashion Show maligned her by claiming she was the reason they had to cancel the show.

"New York Fashion Show took people's money and promised them a second show but never gave it to them. She got blamed for that. She was made to look like the reason they got fleeced," he said.

A representative for New York Fashion Shows was not immediately available to comment.
