New boutiques prove Boulder is no longer a fashion wasteland - Daily Camera

When I proposed covering fashion in Boulder about a decade ago, my editors begrudgingly agreed, under one condition: It had to be a humor column.

Obviously.

Don't make me explain why. You know

why. The columns wrote themselves.

Last week, as I stumbled into a new boutique on west Pearl Street wearing a Def Leppard sweatshirt with the neck cut out and carrying my cell phone covered in (hopefully) chocolate that (hopefully) my daughter hid (somewhere) in my purse, I had two soul-searching epiphanies:

1. The face of fashion in Boulder has changed in the past decade. As Boulder's social and arts scene has continued to refine itself, the fashion options have followed. Just look at the restaurants, hotels, dance and theater accolades and big-name artists that continue to emerge from the shadows of our Flatirons. And as more big-city dwellers relocate to Boulder, and more Boulderites continue to travel the world, the demand for worldly, sophisticated fashions naturally blossoms. It's an extension of our values, our art, the way we see the world and ourselves in it.

And:

2. I'm now the biggest fashion disaster in town. Maybe I always was. Now it's official. My cell phone is so very sticky.

In the past two weeks, two new boutiques opened in Boulder that represent this changing face of fashion in Boulder.

Cedar & Hyde Mercantile, 2015 10th St., opened about a week ago. And Willow, 2595 Canyon

Blvd., opened about a week before that.

In an attempt to balance out the chocolate incident, I will hide behind the cred of these two boutiques to give you a taste of what's new and delicious in Boulder this fall.

East side

Like its location on east Canyon, Willow feels East Coast, with deep purples and rich browns, edgy zipper embellishments, sexy leather jackets, moto accents, metallic-thread weaves and bold stone accessories. This new contemporary clothing boutique feels New York urban -- edgy, yet gloriously sophisticated.

Follow your fingertips through the store, as the racks are packed with the softest suedes, silky leathers, top-notch chiffons and other fingergasmic fabrics. In line

with a love for all things exquisite and eye-catching, the jewelry lineup includes diamonds galore.

Find designers you know and lust -- LAMB, Clare Vivier, DL1961, Henry & Belle -- but also plenty of up-and-coming creative masters to push your comfort zone. And even among the known designers, Willow picks the harder-to-find, trend-pushing styles. You will be surprised by the depth and breadth of fashion in this small Boulder boutique.

My faves:

The Doma emerald green leather jacket with zip-in hood. This epitomizes the new face of Boulder's fashion, a combo of sleek, total comfort, quality and flexibility. Take the hood out and wear the jacket to a fancy farm-to-table dinner date. Zip it in and wear

it to yoga class.

DL1961 zipper pants with moto accents. Rarely do I take interest in jeans, but if I were to wear a pair (hypothetically, of course), I could get down with these, with tough, diagonal moto details down the front pockets.

Clare Vivier purple suede handbag. Because it's purple suede.

Rafe stone-cut clutches. This is my wild card, because they're not exactly day-to-day practical, but I've never seen anything like them. These clutches are made out of precisely cut stones. So shiny and stunning. I see the gold one coming with me to my New Year's Eve party.

An Alchemy cuff made of reclaimed metal. The earthy, eco-friendly aspect feels so Boulder, but the chunky, daring design pushes

us past the predictable.

One big bonus: One of my favorite local, high-end jewelry designers, Blackbird and the Snow, is holding its holiday trunk show at Willow from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7. Blackbird and the Snow repurposes rare, antique Victorian charms -- and its presence elevates Boulder's Willow to the level of ABC Home in New York City, Blue Tree (actress/model Phoebe Cates Kline's store on Madison Avenue in NYC) and a handful of other esteemed international boutiques that also carry this jewelry line.

West side

If Willow is East Coast, then Cedar & Hyde -- appropriately just off west Pearl Street -- is its West Coast counterpart.

Cedar & Hyde is one of those boutiques you want to spend all day in. Maybe move into. Definitely replicate in your own living room. Everything here is intentional, peaceful and like a massage of your senses. The Big Sur candles. The lush towels. Artisan chocolate stacked on the counter, made out of an antique workbench.

Here, an old-fashioned intention is polished with sophistication and simple elegance.

Cedar & Hyde is run by two sisters, Poss and Christie Lambert, who call their shop a "modern mercantile," where you can find unique, quality products supporting the "small makers of the world." Many of the products are American made and all have a story; the shop owners make a point to know the history of every item sold here to ensure everything is ethically made. Nothing in the story is factory-made.

Cedar & Hyde doesn't concern itself as much with fashion trends as it does with providing high-quality, cozy, unique and creative pieces.

If something is handmade with pride, it speaks for itself; then you don't have to overstyle it, Christie Lambert says.

My faves:

The entire middle table of the store, with its collection of home goods, from hand towels to candles to bowls to art. Mercantile style.

Imogene + Willie's raw denim jeans for men. Raw denim is thick, rugged, durable and old school, and it just looks right on a hard-working man (which is the best kind). Plus, this denim is made and designed in America.

The navy trench coat from the Pendleton Portland Collection. Don't touch this jacket unless you plan on buying it, because you won't want to let it go. This fabric is legit. It feels and looks timeless and ageless. Cedar & Hyde is the only Boulder store carrying Pendleton's Portland Collection.

Cedar & Hyde also boasts its own collection of designer rugs, a pretty rare feature for a small shop. These colorful rugs are made by the owners' other sister. The family circle is complete.
