HOME SCHOOL: It doesn’t have a football team or even a physical campus, but the University of Fashion can teach users how to design from the comfort of their own homes. Universityoffashion.com is the brainchild of Francesca Sterlacci, former chairman of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s fashion design program.

The Web site features design video lessons led by FIT and Parsons The New School for Design professors along with industry professionals. The price of a monthly single-user subscription is $19.95; the yearly single-user fee is $195. There’s also a group video license and multiuser video license.

In addition to the lessons, a fashion library provides lectures on trend forecasting, color theory and fashion history, among other topics. Disciplines include draping, sewing, patternmaking, fashion art and product development. There are three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Beginners, for example, learn to drape nine garments, including a princess bodice and an A-line dress, while advanced students can tackle a jacket and bias cowl blouse. The blouse video has 20 modules, with up to 15 steps each.

Sterlacci, who has designed her own collections, said she came up with the Fashion U concept because she understands “what’s needed to be a fashion designer. I wanted to offer a one-on-one experience while preserving the art and craft of fashion design.”
