Calexico host second annual Pretty in Pink Luncheon and Fashion Show - Imperial Valley Press

CALEXICO — The city of Calexico kicked off their Breast Cancer Awareness month with their Pretty in Pink Luncheon and Fashion Show.

Nearly 130 women came in their pink attire to enjoy a fashion show, raffles and to share stories from breast cancer survivors, said Sandra Tauler, community service director for the city of Calexico.

Attendees heard from keynote speaker Karla Flores, of Calexico, as she shared her experience battling the disease.

As a five-year breast cancer survivor, Flores told the crowd when she first discovered a lump in her left breast while performing a self-breast exam in the shower she was scared and disoriented. Having had a family history of breast cancer she immediately made an appointment with her gynecologist.

Numerous tests later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36.

After Flores shared her story, Hildy Carrillo, executive director for Calexico Chamber of Commerce, thanked her and told the group full of women that she feels sometimes the best thing to do is get angry at your cancer diagnosis.

Flores said she agreed with Carrillo’s statement.

“Getting angry helps to be able to accept that you are going to be fighting for your life,” Flores said.

Many attendees were touched as they listened to how Flores dealt with the news, telling her family and fighting cancer.

Judy Hashem, of El Centro, was especially touched by Flores’ story.

“My sister passed away from breast cancer,” she said.

Her sister had been a 12-year breast cancer survivor when it came back at stage four. Hashem took her sister to countless appointments and said it’s not easy to see your loved ones fight for their life.

However, numerous attendees said what they loved about the event was the sense of community these women had to come together in support of a good cause and to show their support for the strong women who have survived breast cancer.

Hashem said the event was very touching and she plans on attending in the future.

Flores stressed the importance of early detection.
