Few things scream fall fashion more than a great denim piece. The American classic, which can be spun in many different ways, is a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Here, the Post’s fashion team reveals their can’t-live-without fall denim items.
Serena French, Senior Fashion Editor:
My favorite jeans are J.Crew’s new Point Sur Denim line made in LA. They have lots of cool distressed Japanese selvedge boyfriend cuts, some with frayed hems, that look like 40-year-old vintage, but my personal faves are the Hightower skinny jeans in the darker rinses. The Hightower has a higher rise that is superflattering.
Bonus: You can bring in an old pair to a J.Crew store and get $20 off your new pair. They are donating the old jeans to Blue Jeans Go Green, an organization that recycles the jeans into insulation for communities in need.
Anahita Moussavian, Deputy Fashion Editor, @anahitaglitters:
I’m not really a bluejeans kind of girl — a crop top and tutu more accurately sums up my superfemme look. So when it comes to denim, I’m always on the hunt for classics with a cool twist. This Levis number is a killer combo: Built from a sturdy washed fabric that’s whipped into a fitted silhouette, it’s a perfect finishing touch to literally any outfit. And the personalization? Y-E-S. Not only is the red font a subtle throwback to ’50s cool, it transforms this otherwise essential layering piece to signature status.
Johannah Masters, Fashion Market Editor, @johannahmasters:
I’m a sucker for anything black and anything denim, and this 2-in-1 jacket can also double as work-to-weekend wear. Denim perfection!
Timothy Mitchell, Fashion Writer, @nighttim:
You definitely have a pair of denim pants, and maybe a jacket or shorts — but how about a boxy denim T-shirt in mom-jean wash with frayed edges? Pair this tee with a midi skirt or black trousers for contrast — or go Canadian tux luxe, and match it with a good, old-fashioned pair of jeans. London design duo Paulo Almeida and Marta Marques have been charming insiders for seasons with their neo-’90s aesthetic. The young label is gaining traction, now sells at Opening Ceremony and is also launching a Topshop collaboration.
Kirsten Fleming, Senior Reporter, @kirflem:
When overalls became fashionable again, I was thrilled — I am inherently a lazy dresser. I wore the hell out of them during the ’90s, but I only managed to save an OshKosh engineer pair that I had cut into shorts. With that in mind, I need a nice denim pair to carry me through the next few seasons — and this baggy number, made with Japanese denim, is on my wish list. I can throw them over a wool sweater, button-down or a simple T-shirt — plus, they don’t look like I ripped them off the rack at Gap Kids, which, at 5 feet tall, I have been known to do.
Bree Bonagofsky, Fashion Assistant, @breebnyp:
I have a weakness for anything iridescent and shiny, so it’s no surprise my top denim pick embodies both of those qualities — to me, this grungy aesthetic, paired with just the right amount of glitz, makes for the perfect jean.
Teresa Yorkgitis, Fashion Assistant, @thefashionassistant:
Someone recently pointed out that I tend to wear leather a lot — maybe too much — in my daily wardrobe. And wouldn’t you know it? My must-have fall denim item has just a bit of stretch with more than a bit of lambskin patches. Do I need to go to Leather-holics Anonymous yet?
