As New York's fashion elite show off their fall collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, dozens of Berkeley College fashion students are working behind the scenes distributing newsletters, blogging and working on social media posts.
Fashion Week began last week and runs through Thursday with dozens of runway shows at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. The unpaid students are working among the journalists, buyers and celebrities at the shows as an "educational experience," college officials said.
Berkeley College -- a for-profit college with campuses in Woodland Park, Paramus, Woodbridge, Newark, Clifton and Dover -- has a fashion marketing and management degree program.
Raquel Rivera, one of the students blogging from the shows, said she is excited for the opportunity to be part of fashion's biggest week.
“I’m blogging my activities from the Edwing D'Angelo 2014 Fall Presentation and Adolfo Sanchez AW 2014 Collection. And, I want to see if there is a new hot-shot designer — someone who just comes out of the woodwork and surprises everyone else. I know that many of today’s best designers got their start during Fashion Week and have gone on to great careers,” Rivera said.
In addition to covering the shows via blogs, Twitter and Instagram, Berkeley College students are helping distribute the Daily Front Row, an industry publication.
“I want Raquel and our other students to take advantage of events that are geared to teaching them all of the basics about fashion,” said Joshua Williams, chairman of Berkeley's fashion marketing and management program. “They can leverage this experience, as many trends are born out of Fashion Week. It is important for them to see what is happening, get involved, and network because their eventual careers will rely on understanding the current state of the fashion industry.”
