History: More hangouts; Faces and Fashion - Bucyrus Telegraph Forum

Diane Fawley submitted this photo and updated information in regard to the “teen hangouts” columns. Diane said the store sat empty for a year or so until her dad, Dick Walkins, left Clover Farm and bought the Pantry Shoppe in 1951-52.

Half of the shop was a mini grocery with canned goods, bread and a small meat case with cold cuts and cheeses. The other half was a soda bar, jukebox, booths, and of course there was a pinball machine.

Then Scheck’s Grocery opened a store on North Sandusky Avenue and Dick Walkins was hired as the produce manager. Diane’s brother Jerry joined the Navy, so being the oldest daughter, she ran the Pantry Shoppe on Saturday and Sunday evenings with the help of her boyfriend, Bill Fawley, who she later married. She would do homework, or needlework on quiet times. Early in 1953, business was not good, so her dad closed the Pantry Shoppe and she went to work after school for Scheck’s Grocery.

Susan Kohls Hogan wanted to add to Freddie’s Restaurant story. “I learned a lot about human nature on my first job. The funniest thing was when the dish washer, one of my classmates at the time, put the candles from all the tables in the dishwasher to get cleaned. Candle wax and hot water, you can guess what happened!”
