Fall fashion forward - San Antonio Express

Fall's statement-making season is about impressive, sophisticated style rich with color, extravagant textiles and reshaped silhouettes with hints of haute couture.

Softly rounded shoulders make for roomier coats. Cocoonlike dress shapes move away from the body, and generous jackets allow for layering underneath.

A garment's design often begins with the fabric, and this season the choices are beautifully varied. Leather becomes a full-on dress or skirt but is most wanted in a motorcycle jacket. Fur, real and faux, is a detail or the trim on a sweater collar or the sleeves of a coat.

Chiffon, velvet, lace and antique fabrics look luxurious on any garment. Brocade and jacquard are tinged with shimmer and iridescent color. And scuba-inspired neoprene is bonded to wool, tweed and lace for newness in an assortment of garments.

Digital prints, from abstract to cosmic, look like a painting or photograph. Reliable leopard print, supersized plaids and houndstooth checks are front and center. So are winter white, gray, lilac, red, chartreuse and shades of blue and green.

“I'm really pleased with what's in store for fall with attention to details and especially clean lines,” said Lizzy Bowring, fashion director of New York's trend forecasting firm, Stylesight. “Women are looking for true trends, not trends that are out of touch.”

Bowring said women have gone through all the frivolous stages of having to buy clothes because they have to have the latest. “I truly believe that women are done with that and are looking for new classics to add to their wardrobe,” she said.

Statement pieces are what women want, she said, “Something they can build on with what they already have in their closets.”

Among her fall suggestions are trousers, from slim cigarette pants to looser designs with an androgynous appeal.

“How gorgeous is it when a woman can look super-sexy in relaxed, tailored trousers with pockets that you can put your hands into, a white shirt and pair of high heels. That's a classic look for every woman.”

Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus fashion director, is sold on animal print in leopard, tiger and zebra and on just about everything, including coats, peplum dresses, handbags, shoes and jewelry. He said the print can be all-over bold as well as muted.

Leather and lace detailing also will be important, as seen in wool jackets with leather sleeves or slim-fit trousers inset with lace down the sides. And he called red fall's “new neutral.”

Going forward into the season, Bowring said women are much smarter about the way they approach their wardrobes and will invest in refreshed classics of style from the little black dress to an updated coat.

Designer Tom Mora of J. Crew, agreed. Back in February he designed a collection loaded with separates, including printed sweaters and dresses and oversized coats — garments he emphasized were designed based on what women told him they wanted.

“Fall is about clothes that you want to become your new classics,” he said, “not throwaway trends.”
