Mademoiselle C

There are just so many ways Carine Roitfeld can say she loves fashion in "Mademoiselle C," a somewhat interesting documentary that brings us into the inner workings of a magazine, but harps a bit too much on her ideas of fashion and style.
Roitfeld is best known as the "porn-chic" (she says "erotic chic") model who went on to become one of the most respected people in the fashion industry and includes among her inner circle Karl Lagerfeld, Diane von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang.
Directed by Fabien Constant, known for his fashion documentaries, the movie opens with Roitfeld ending her 10-year job as editor in chief of Vogue France to launch her own publication, CR. Roitfeld, 59, can be seen at editorial meetings, photo shoots and parties.
The French-born daughter of a Russian emigre father and French mother does talk about her personal life - she's been happily unwed with Christian Restoin for 30 years and they have two grown children, including a daughter who's about to give birth to their first grandchild - but never gets beyond the superficial.
Like many recent fashion documentaries, "Mademoiselle C" at times seems to lionize its subject's celebrity and is a good advertisement for her magazine. The film's most interesting part deals with her hostile relationship with Conde Nast, which Roitfeld claims pressured photographers not to work for her. The movie skims over this split, but pursuing it would have provided more compelling insight into the fashion world.
