Lark Creek Newport Beach closed at Fashion Island over the weekend, according to a goodbye letter left on the door to guests, vendors and employees.
The farm-to-table restaurant opened at Fashion Island two years ago, taking over the old Daily Grill space. It was Lark Creek Restaurant Group’s first seasonally influenced concept in Orange County. The Bay Area concept featured wood-fired steaks and fish, cocktails and pastas.
The letter, posted in a front entrance window, said the restaurant decided to close effective March 28. Vendors were told to contact the Irvine Company, which owns the mall. Employees, who were thanked for their service, were told to contact the company’s human resources department through email.
The Irvine Co. was unaware of the company’s decision to close suddenly.
“We were surprised at Lark Creek’s closure as they still have a lease agreement with Fashion Island,” Irvine Co. spokesman Bill Lobdell told the Register in a prepared statement. “We look forward to bringing something new and exciting to the Lark Creek space.”
Lark Creek had invested roughly $2 million transforming the 5,000-square-foot site at Fashion Island. It’s unclear why the restaurant closed. The company has not returned a request for comment.
Lark Creek opened at a time when Fashion Island began expanding its restaurant choices at the mall. Other restaurants that have opened include Fig & Olive, Red O by Rick Bayless and Lemonade. Of the 40 food establishments at the mall, 25 are sit-down restaurants.
Last year, the restaurant’s original chef, John Ledbetter, left. In January, Lark Creek joined forces with Moana Restaurant Group, which runs Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at Liberty Station in San Diego. The San Rafael, Calif.-based hospitality group took over management operations of Lark Creek’s portfolio of restaurants, including the Newport Beach location.
