Union Depot to host open house, fashion show - Pioneer Press

Fresh off two sold-out performances of the "Riders on an Orphan Train" multi-media tour, the Union Depot in downtown St. Paul will host an open house, a dog-friendly celebration and a "time travel" fashion show as part of a series of events in October.

The Union Depot on Saturday will host the first-ever Kendama open, an all-day tournament featuring a Japanese game with a skill set that lands somewhere between martial arts and golf.

Players competing for $1,500 in cash prizes will use three cups of different sizes to catch a ball launched by a spiked instrument. Pre-registration is $8 and on-site registration is $10. Tournaments will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a football game will be televised by the cash bar.

From 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, the remodeled train station will put on wedding-quality flourishes and host an open house with a cash bar, complimentary appetizers and event vendors. "Come see Union Depot's event and banquet spaces all dressed up," reads the invite.

From 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 23, the Depot will host a "time travel" fashion show featuring the works of local designers channeling looks from the 1920s, the 1950s and the future. Designers have yet to be announced to the public.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 26, the Depot will be turned into the "doggie depot," with obedience demonstrations, pet costume contests, pet photos, an ask-the-vet segment and rescue dogs up for adoption. The event is sponsored by radio stations myTalk 107.1 and KS95.

The Depot is located at 214 E. 4th St. More information is available online at UnionDepot.org, or by calling 651-202-2700.
