Nili Lotan, whose namesake line of luxe basics is a wardrobe staple for both celebrities and everyday, on-the-go women, introduced her spring 2014 collection last Thursday with a performance in her TriBeCa showroom. The Israeli-American designer said that the “very minimal, clean, pure” aesthetic of her 25 new pieces remained true to the vision of her very first collection a decade ago. To present the clothes, she commissioned LeeSaar the Company to incorporate them into an original modern dance, but because the spring looks weren’t designed specifically for dancers, she faced a few obstacles in preparing for the unusual show format. “It’s not models, so you’re not dealing with size 2,” she said. “They’re short and they’re big-muscled, and it was a challenge because most of the samples are a size 2, size 4.” She wound up designing special briefs for the dancers to perform in.

Creating the sensual routine in collaboration with the company’s founders and choreographers, Lee Sher and Saar Hariri, on the other hand, couldn’t have gone more smoothly. “I feel that we approach the term ‘beauty’ from the same place,” Hariri said. “It comes from a very inner place, and it has many possibilities inside, and I think that her clothes are talking the same language.” A single row of white chairs lined each of the two walls in the hallway-like showroom, Lotan’s throwback to the standard-issue, intimate fashion show setups of the 1960s and ’70s. Seven dancers weaved around each other on the long floor down the middle. Occasionally, six would break for a wardrobe change while a single dancer took center stage for a solo performance. It was 14 minutes of entertainment meant, in Lotan’s words, to “emphasize and bring out these little details that are in the design that you may overlook when you just see a person in the street.” Above is an abbreviated peek at the dance, the full version of which is now on the brand’s Vimeo page.
