Fashion shows, cocktails and shopping highlight Bay City's Downtown Divas - The Ann Arbor News - MLive.com

BAY CITY, MI — As Kathy LaLonde tells it, there are two types of Divas: repeaters and newbies.

LaLonde, owner of Little House, is offering a zippered travel tote for $5.99, handy for toting all those Diva delights home, to any Diva stopping in during Downtown Diva weekend.

To say LaLonde is excited about this twice-yearly event is an understatement. But then, she's been around since the beginning.

“We were looking for an event for a weekend for gals,” she remembers. “We started with just a fashion show and then added Cocktails in the City.”

It's expanded to more than 300 Divas hitting the sidewalks for the four-day event. It has grown so much, venues for the two premier events — Cocktails in the City and Fashion & French Toast — have changed to accommodate the growing crowds.

“I still see some of the original people,” LaLonde said. “I like to see repeat Divas, and I like to meet the new Divas.”

Over the years, LaLonde has met people from as near as Saginaw, Midland, Detroit and Grand Rapids to people from Florida, Nebraska and Arizona.

There is a prize for the Diva who has traveled the farthest, usually someone from out of state.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, with the ever-popular Cocktails in the City.

Candace Bales, executive director of the Downtown Management Board, describes this as a laid-back fashion show. Featuring accessories, models, dressed in black mingle, offering those a chance to see items up close and ask questions.

“Purses, scarves, vests, we don't have rules,” she laughed. “Hats are biggies, especially with winter coming, as well as fun, funky hats. You will see a little bit of everything."

Tickets include the fashion show, along with food samplings and wine. There is also a cash bar.

Music will be provided by Jim McKeith on guitar.

As added entertainment, those attending also receive a goodie bag filled with gift certificates to the 34 participating businesses, as well as giveaways. Those giveaways include the centerpieces on the table, all from GT Homestead.

“It's the perfect after-hours event,” said Bales, “and a great way to start the event. Those attending can stay for dinner on their own, or go next door (to Stein Haus) and listen to music.”

Divas should set their alarm clocks Oct. 12 to not miss Fashion & French Toast, an event that has grown so big, it's now at the DoubleTree by Hilton. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

The $25 ticket includes a full-course breakfast as well as a runway fashion show from with music from a DJ.

There are more goodie bags and giveaways, including the centerpieces, this time designed by all the participating businesses.

In between cocktails and French toast, businesses will be offering delights tailored made for Divas.

Shops will offer bargains, refreshments and in-store prizes.

When a Diva just has to take a break, Base Camp Fitness Co., 512 Adams, offers free chair massages, and Bayshire Beauty Academy, 917 Saginaw St., is offering free manicures with a pedicure.
