It is hard, as a newspaper girl, to resist a “What’s black and white and red all over?” opener, especially when that’s exactly what the Academy Awards red carpet served up Sunday.
There were two notable moments with black gowns, which make up in formality what they lack in festivity. One was a sheer-sleeved Saint Lauren gown on Margot Robbie and the other on Cate Blanchett wearing Maison Margiela, the label newly under the helm of John Galliano.
But white-hot dresses stole the night. The charge was led by the inimitable Lupita Nyong’o, who was dripping in pearls thanks to her stunningly texture Calvin Klein Collection halter dress. Best actress winner Julianne Moore took home a statue in a striking beaded white strapless gown by Chanel.
With Jennifer Lawrence missing in action, Marion Cotillard carried the Dior torch in grand fashion. She did what few other actresses could, pulling off an eyelet dress that was gathered in the back with a strip of black across her upper thighs. Add to the ranks of the white lady knights: Carmen Ejogo, Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Faith Hill. The country singer chose a plunging neck wrap dress most notable, perhaps, as it first appeared just days ago on the J.Mendel runway in New York.
What little color there was on the carpet came in red, which had the desired effect of grabbing attention. Rosamund Pike, who gave birth recently, looked absolutely stunning in a cherry red lace Givenchy. (The impeccable fit made up for the saggy situation at the Golden Globes.) “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson thankfully abandoned her usual silver selections, going instead a bright red with a Saint Laurent gown. And Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo, a.k.a. Mrs. Adam Levine, wins the award for best arm candy in her scarlet Armani gown and matching bold lip.
The scant few other shades spotted stuck mostly to pastels, namely pink. There was Kerry Washington in a peplumed Miu Miu, Gwyneth Paltrow in a one-shouldered Ralph & Russo (with oversized flower to boot) and Oprah Winfrey in a silk tulle gown by Vera Wang. The baby blue in Reese Witherspoon’s Tom Ford gown was so pale many mistook it for white. Octavia Spencer gave a nod to her favorite designer, Tadashi Shoji, in a mint green dressn while Felicity Jones opted for a high-necked Alexander McQueen gown in the lightest of grays.
One especially nice moment: Sienna Miller in navy wearing one of the first red carpet pieces from Oscar de la Renta by Peter Copping collection.
The gentleman were a bit uneven. There was Eddie Redmayne looking dashing in a navy tuxedo by Alexander McQueen. And Michael Keaton looked classically handsome in a charcoal custom Ralph Lauren Black Label. Common looked dapper in velvet Prada.
But two men made my worst-dressed list. What is one to make of Jared Leto‘s pastel number by Givenchy? It’s a look worthy of a prom king that only he could pull off, and I’m not sure he did. But he went for it, down to the accessories, with the white shoes and the pink corsage.
The accessories did in another big name of the night: J.K. Simmons. He won for best supporting actor but lost the fashion race in a classic case of overdoing it. The hat, the watch chain and the royal purple pocket square to match his wife’s dress looked far too cheesy.
