The 17 Best Fashion Short Films of 2014 - Paste Magazine

Every year the fashion world produces hundreds of short films, and while they’re basically glorified ads, they’re also lots of fun. Some tell dramatic stories, some funny ones, and others barely use a word to transport us to another world. Nothing conveys a mood quite like carefully selected clothes, and the best directors know how to seamlessly meld film with fashion.

We’ve rounded up the 17 best fashion short films of 2014, with videos from Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Hermès, Prada and more. Go to Coney Island with Erin Fetherston, a dreamy field with Marc Jacobs, Paris with Saint Laurent, and to a precious memory with Rachel Antonoff. Let fashion sweep you off your feet.

17. “Boardwalk Birdie” for Erin Fetherston

This Coney Island romp encapsulates a perfect summer’s day, complete with roller coasters, seagulls and a beachy vibe. Almost as a bonus, Erin Fetherston’s collection is as playful and fun as the video.

16. “Chaos” for Gareth Pugh

Styled as a surreal runway show, the models in “Chaos” stutter by with some clever editing. The second in a series of three shorts, the film is a representation of the live performance that replaced the traditional catwalk for Spring/Summer 2015.

15. “Daisy Dream” for Marc Jacobs

Shot by Sofia Coppola in her signature, dreamy style, this short ad for perfume Daisy Dream is bolstered by Sleigh Bells’ “End of the Line,” and some saccharine-sweet visuals.

14. Prada, Fall/Winter 2014

Mysterious, ominous and a little bit seductive, Prada’s short film is a window into the Fall/Winter collection—and an ambiguous relationship.

13. “Instagirl: Imaan Hammam” for Vogue

Model Imaan Hammam dances her way around New York to the beat of Storm Queen’s “Look Right Through (MK Vocal Edit).” As infectious as the beat, Hammam’s dance moves will have you wiggling in your seat.

12. “Paris, 2014” for Saint Laurent and Purple magazine

For a fashion film, this short focuses very little on clothes and more on the tumultuous relationship between two young, Parisian lovers. But it all falls into place when a quote by Yves himself appears at the end of the film: “The most beautiful clothes that can dress a woman are the arms of the man she loves.”

11. “Secret Garden III — Versailles” for Dior

Nothing says style quite like Versailles. In part three of the “Secret Garden” series by Dior, a synth-heavy Dépêche Mode song throbs as the Dior-clad women run through the famed palace, uncovering new secrets.

10. Alexander Wang x H&M

Athletic, daring and bold, it’s hard to expect anything else from an Alexander Wang/H&M collaboration. From a dim locker room, to an unforgiving tundra, to an industrial building, each setting is harsher than the last and emphasizes the collection’s utility and urban ruggedness.

9. “Arborea” for Dolce & Gabanna

Reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn as Sabrina perched in a tree (and likewise, shot in black and white), “Arborea” tells a simple, sweet love story.

8. “Dear Diary” for Orla Kiely

A peek into a Londoner’s trip to L.A., the film is sun-bleached, fun and full of a teen’s charming observations. And despite being retro-inspired, the film doesn’t shy away from the 21st century; it mentions Instagram and Snapchat, and features Orla Kiely’s pattern-bright iPhone cases.

7. “Men Etcetera” for Hermès

Come through the looking-glass with Hermès’ playful short film. The model’s reflection acts as an independent being, offering wardrobe alternates and joining him for an outing. Where can we get one of those mirrors?

6. “The One That I Want” for Chanel

Baz Luhrmann manages to balance opulence with heartbreak in this ad for Chanel No. 5. Starring Gisele Bündchen and Michiel Huisman, the short film features a stripped-down, haunting rendition of “The One That I Want,” (yes, the chipper tune from Grease) and some beautiful aerial surfing shots.

5. “Cover Girl” by Vogue

The plot: Lena Dunham, nervous about her impending cover shoot for Vogue, enlists the help of Hamish Bowles to help her find the perfect editorial pose. Taking her through famous models and their signature mannerisms, Bowles and Dunham perform pose after pose, culminating in a frenzied dance that is both funny and toe-tapping.

4. “Mine” for Nowness

Described by Nowness as a “graceful, beautifully dressed game of chase,” this short film serves as both a moving catalogue and an ambitious editing challenge. The result is a seamless dance where clothes change owners on a whim. Nowness’ website even serves as a “shoppable film,” where users can click on the clothes and review them as the video plays.

3. “Somebody” by Miranda July, in collaboration with Miu Miu

Part short film, part advertisement, part pure genius, Miranda July’s “Somebody” ad is also a fashion film, with costume design by Miu Miu. Bringing people together in a totally new-fashioned way, July’s “Somebody” app purports to let strangers do the talking. In turns charming, funny and absurd, the concept is killer—but the app itself has some harsh reviews on iTunes_ for being “buggy.” But who said fashion was practical?

2. “First Kiss” for Wren

This inventive video was a viral hit. Since being uploaded in March, it’s garnered 90 million views. But it also stirred up some controversy when people realized it wasn’t just kissing for kissing’s sake—it was an advertisement for clothing company Wren, whose clothes are worn by actors. But knowing it’s an ad doesn’t make it any less interesting. Even if the participants are professionals, they’re still strangers, and the nervous giggling and unexpected chemistry makes for a surprisingly intimate film.

1. “Crush” for Rachel Antonoff

Crush: Rachel Antonoff’s Spring Summer 2014 Video from Deenie Hartzog on Vimeo.

Not to be outdone by last year’s Lena Dunham-directed film, Rachel Antonoff’s Spring/Summer 2014 video is as sweet as the featured collection. The premise—the story of how Antonoff’s parents met and fell in love, narrated by the parents themselves — is perfectly executed. Starring their son Jack, of fun., and Gillian Jacobs, and featuring Jenny Slate, Mae Whitman and Andrew Dost, this short is both funny and heartwarming.
